Before I do that through I am going to hook it up as a secondary drive in my 980X build and do a ATTO benchmark before the OS is installed to measure the difference. Does that sound like a plan?
There is no point in fitting the Vertex 3 to an X58 motherboard as it only has native SATA 2 support. I'd just connect it to your Z68 native SATA3 (white ports) as a spare, and do any testing there.

Thanks Wendy. When I get it I will post all the results of it with the OS installed and without. I am very interested to see these results.

For anyone thinking of using Truecrypt on their SSD, the following is a benchmark of a Vertex 2 120GB (25nm) with TrueCrypt (AES) on a colleague's work laptop:

Vertex2 TrueCrypt Benchmark.png

The performance will obviously vary according to the laptop's CPU performance and whether it supports hardware encryption. In this case it was a Toshiba Satellite Pro U200-182 with a Core Centrino dual core 2GHz, running Windows XP, AHCI enabled and its partition 4K aligned.

It would be nice if there was a way of using the self-encryption capability of the SandForce (at least the Vertex2 SSD) for user data (e.g. with a password), but from what I can see this built-in encryption turned out to be little other than for preventing direct access to the NAND chips. For example, if a file is over-written on an SSD to "secure erase" the file, an SSD will write the new data in different NAND blocks due to wear-levelling, so the encryption basically prevents someone directly accessing the NAND to retrieve data that can no longer be accessed through the SATA interface.

There was no option in the BIOS or the OCZ Toolbox to set a HDD password, so Truecrypt was used to encrypt the volume. On the other hand, despite the sad-looking benchmark, the OS, application launches and software installations/updates still fly much like as if there was no encryption.

Re: Post Your SSD / HDD Result Here

A friend asked me for help cloning his OS over to his new Vertex2 120GB, so while I had a lend of the SSD and laptop, I decided to give it a quick benchmark.

Apart from cloning the Windows 7 partition over, the SSD is brand new out of the box and the benchmark was carried out with the SSD in my PC:

Vertex2_115GB_CDM.png

Vertex2_115GB_AS_SSD.png

Vertex2_115GB_ATTO.png

The following are a few quick before & after stopwatch timings. Note that this laptop has a HP OEM Windows 7 x64 OS installation (i.e. along with all HP's bloatware) Microsoft Security Essentials was installed and active. The laptop was running on battery as I didn't have the power supply with me.

Original HDD - WD Scorpio Black 500GB:
  • Desktop appears: 56.5s
  • Skype starts up: 1m11.3s (~end of boot)
  • Internet Explorer 9 appears: 1m38.9s (boot to Internet home page)
  • Word 2007 load time: 8.1s
  • VLC load time: 5.1s
  • Shutdown time: 23.4s

New SSD - OCZ Vertex 2 120GB (25nm):
  • Desktop appears: 24.4s
  • Skype starts up: 37.2s (~end of boot)
  • Internet Explorer 9 appears: 49.2s (boot to Internet home page)
  • Word 2007 load time: 2.5s
  • VLC load time: 1.8s
  • Shutdown time: 9.5s

Re: Post Your SSD / HDD Result Here

I just got a GigaBit switch to connect my Seagate GoFlex Network drive through. This is the through-put moving a heap of movie ISOs onto it:
netdisk.jpg
I'm pleased. approx. 280 Mbps sustained to the disk! I'll run some benchmarks later...

PS: This is a $120 2 TB drive to be used as media server.

OCZ Revo x2 240 GB.
Do you think I need to RMA, anyone? I used OCZ secure erase, reset RAID 0 array and did a clean install of win 7/64, this is what OCZ tech. support advised me to do but it looks like I still have a problem. TIA

Which PCIe slot are you running it on?
Because I don't have a graphics card in my Z68 at the moment, I'm able to run mine on the 2nd PCIe x16 slot. If you are running your Revo on the 3rd PCIe slot x16 @ x4 then you add a little bit of latency, and that would account for the slightly lower 4K random performance and slightly lower performance overall. If this is the case, then IMO, your Revo is fine.

Also, did you run these tests with the Revo as a system drive or as a spare?

Thanks, it is in 2nd slot and it is the (boot) System drive. 3rd slot has nothing right now.

OK that explains why your results are a little lower than mine, and the cause of the horrible HD-Tune graph.

You would normally benchmark a drive when its connected as a spare and not running the OS. When its running the OS, Windows will always wan't to access the system drive for some reason, and this can have a drastic effect on the results if the drive you are benching is also the system drive.

I would say your Revo is fine.

Samsung 830 SSD
128GB

I love Samsung's bravado in answering a reviewer's confusion about formatted size vs advertised size.

"Some drive manufacturers reduce the overall capacity of the drive by implementing what's known as an overprovisioning segment. This overprovising segment is establish to compensate for flaws in a drive's firmware and controller design."

Overprovisioning? We don't need no stinkin' overprovisioning!
