2 X Samsung HD103SJ Spinpoint F3 1TB failed

I purchased (2 X Samsung HD103SJ Spinpoint F3 1TB) approximately six months ago, after reading good reviews on line,within three months my first HD died with the click of death.

Over the past few weeks I noticed my computer started to freeze up on me, so I ran CHKDSK today, and found I have bad clusters on the other.

Why have the HD'S failed in such a short space of time ?

Can someone recommend a reliable brand, preferably an HD that will last longer than six months

No one can give an explanation on why our hard drives died, but from what i read, most users are very happy with Samsung Spinpoint drives (i have the F1 model and it works perfect so far).
I guess that you simply was unlucky, it can happen to everyone.

There is no reliable brand, i had failures from Toshiba, Hitachi and Seagate. But so far zero failures from Western Digital and Samsung,
But if you do a small search you will find users having something negative to say about every brand out there.

Unfortunately, there is no HDD manufacturer that produces 100% reliable hard disks. From my experience over the past 10 years, including while working in a computer service shop a while back, I've seen failures from all the major makers, including previous makers such as Maxtor, Quantum, IBM, Excelstor, etc. covering both 2.5" and 3.5" form factors and a wide range of capacities.

As for the which brand fails more than another, this swings around. For example, several years ago, I seen many Maxtor, Seagate, Samsung and Fujitsu failures and very rarely a WD or Hitachi fail. Lately, I've seen quite a lot of WD failures (mostly 2.5" Scorpios and a few 3.5" Caviars) and several Hitachi's, but just a handful from others and no Samsung or Seagate failures.

My advice which seems to work well for me is to find HDD models (instead of focusing on a brand) on NewEgg with the highest number of user reviews and compare the star ratings. If the HDD has a high number of 1 star ratings with most users saying "DOA", "Died after 2 weeks", etc and another has mostly 5 star ratings with very few user reviews of failures, this is fairly good indication that the one with lots of 1 star ratings is not as reliable.

Based on the 1TB F3, there is a 10% user rating of 1 Star out of 859 reviews. The 1 star ratings are mainly about DOA's and early failures, so this gives a very rough fail estimate of 1 in 10. So unfortunately you were unlucky enough to have 2 fail.

To give a few comparisons, the Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1.5TB has 29% 1 Star ratings and 47% 5 star ratings out of 2276. This doesn't really surprise me considering all the people I've heard with problems with this particular drive. The Samsung Spinpoint F4 HD204UI 1TB has 4% 1 Star ratings and 79% 5 star ratings out of 153, so this seems to be much more reliable model. The catch however is its slower 5400RPM spindle and that the drive has just recently entered the market. Also, have a look at any HDD with over 100 user reviews, as you'll see that there is not a single one that doesn't have any reviews saying "DOA", "Died after x weeks", etc.

I think that many people think these days they could buy cheap HDDs from the mass market and expect them to run error free for months and years, even 24/7.

That is just a big misunderstanding...

Sometimes the best gain is to lose

I got 17 to 15 Reallocated sector count error and some HDD got multiple error

( Seagate 7200.11 1.5 TB F.W CC1A )
I don't know what I have to do ?

P.S most inportant thing is I'm still alive

Think I’m going to buy something less expensive, with a lower capacity 640 GB or less, do most of my backing up on Disc, and look at an SSD when the prices lower.

Looking at New egg with a review count and rating this done well.

Does anyone know if my Samsung would be protected under warranty, if i have proof of purchase (PAYPAL) and it was bought indirectly through a supplier, from over the internet?

For warranty, I would suggest contacting the supplier. If it's an online shop, they probably have an RMA process that you can follow. For example, on Dabs, I would log on to my account, go into the order history and bring up the order that had this HDD. On that page, I would click 'Return' next to the product I want to return under warranty. With some other online shops, you need to write to the support or call them. E.g. CPC Ireland requires calling their help-desk to arrange a return.

Generally with most online shops, you would need to ship the faulty item back (e.g. via the post office or arrange a courier) and the shop would ship the replacement to you. Some other shops will organise a collection, usually requiring the customer to pay for the shipment.

While SSDs don't have moving parts, they are also prone to failure, just like RAM. I had a 64GB SSD fail several months ago (completely disappeared from the BIOS), but was replaced under warranty.

Think I’m going to buy something less expensive, with a lower capacity 640 GB or less, do most of my backing up on Disc, and look at an SSD when the prices lower. Western Digital Caviar Blue WD6400AAKS 640GB Does anyone know if my Samsung would be protected under warranty, if i have proof of purchase (PAYPAL) and it was bought indirectly through a supplier, from over the internet?

From my experience over the past 10 years, including while working in a computer service shop a while back, I've seen failures from all the major makers, including previous makers such as Maxtor, Quantum, IBM, Excelstor, etc. covering both 2.5" and 3.5" form factors and a wide range of capacities. As for the which brand fails more than another, this swings around. For example, several years ago, I seen many Maxtor, Seagate, Samsung and Fujitsu failures and very rarely a WD or Hitachi fail. Lately, I've seen quite a lot of WD failures (mostly 2.5" Scorpios and a few 3.5" Caviars) and several Hitachi's, but just a handful from others and no Samsung or Seagate failures. My advice which seems to work well for me is to find HDD models (instead of focusing on a brand) on NewEgg with the highest number of user reviews and compare the star ratings. If the HDD has a high number of 1 star ratings with most users saying "DOA", "Died after 2 weeks", etc and another has mostly 5 star ratings with very few user reviews of failures, this is fairly good indication that the one with lots of 1 star ratings is not as reliable. Based on the 1TB F3, there is a 10% user rating of 1 Star out of 859 reviews. The 1 star ratings are mainly about DOA's and early failures, so this gives a very rough fail estimate of 1 in 10. So unfortunately you were unlucky enough to have 2 fail. To give a few comparisons, the Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1.5TB has 29% 1 Star ratings and 47% 5 star ratings out of 2276. This doesn't really surprise me considering all the people I've heard with problems with this particular drive. The Samsung Spinpoint F4 HD204UI 1TB has 4% 1 Star ratings and 79% 5 star ratings out of 153, so this seems to be much more reliable model. The catch however is its slower 5400RPM spindle and that the drive has just recently entered the market. Also, have a look at any HDD with over 100 user reviews, as you'll see that there is not a single one that doesn't have any reviews saying "DOA", "Died after x weeks", etc.
