I have used Epson Claria inks, but I admit it's been a few years. But you can see examples of smudging with both printers in the Canon-Epson comparison thread. That is Claria ink in the Epson.

Thought it was time to suggest some 'X-files' type of possible theories just in case pcarey experienced the same problem with a brand new printer. Very happy to read he seems to have finally solved the problem!

AHHHH. I misunderstood what you meant by smudging. I thought you were speaking of smudging from normal handling. I was thinking about the problem posted in the thread I linked to, which sounds very much like poor ink absorption/drying leading to a printed surface that's easily smudged/scratched. Not thinking of how waterproof the prints are on non water-resistant print surfaces.

A final note on disc printing problems with my Epson Artisan 50. Since I learned to ignore the instructions to align the arrows on the tray and the tray guide, I've had no more problems with errors when printing multiple discs. Just push the tray in (gently) until it stops. Don't force it beyond that point. Ignore the arrows. You will find that it's about a quarter inch past arrow alignment. It's worked every time since I started doing it this way. So much for following the manufacturer's instructions!
