Hi, I'm thinking of buying either of the printers listed in the title solely for CD/DVD printing.

Which has a better print quality?

Do they both print on silver printable DVDs/cds?

Canon concerns me a bit cause it has a 5 cartridge system you can't use OEM cartridges, and when one of the cartridges gets used up the whole printer stops working.

But I hear it has a better quality than D5160.

The Canon has far better drivers and software. Also some of the HPs have had issues with damage to the discs' printable surface during printing.

I'm not sure what you mean by "OEM" Canon ink tanks, but you certainly CAN use compatible tanks in the Canon. Although you do have to get around the chips on the tanks, this is not difficult. Compatible tanks are selling for around $3 US. I thinks it's reasonable to assume that any printer will stop working if one color runs out, as it should if you don't want to burn up the print head.

Having both the 5160 and an iP4000 I will say that the Canon is a much better performer. My canon is a few years old now and not a single hiccup.

    OEM:
    Original Equipment Manufacturer
"OEM" is synonymous with "genuine" in this context, so the statement makes no sense, although we know what you mean

A 5 cartridge system should please you, not concern you.
A 4 or more cartridge system is more economical because you replace/refill just that color which is low.
The folks with the tri-color carts will tell you how miserable it is to have to replace an entire tri-color cart when just one color is low

antlanticinkjets is the only re-filler/supplier that I know of that offers reset carts for iP4300.
AFAIK, you don't have to give up your warranty when using these.
There are pro re-fillers that use them, so that speaks volumes to me.

Forget the HP, get the Canon and don't look back.

    Thanks for the replies guys!

Yes, sorry, I mixed OEMs with "compatible tanks"

I'll go with the Canon as per your advice, thank you!

I have the iP4300. Since when can it print directly on CD/DVDs? I use my Epson R200 for that.

It always could, you just need to enable that function in the USA. Visit HERE for details and instructions. You also need to find a Canon disc tray, which is also explained there.

    Hey tim_k,

If you get your iP4300 enabled, it would be interesting to hear your Epson vs. Canon opinion.
