This thread has been slowly sliding more and more off the topic of Verbatim Glossy Printable DVDs.

Could we please get back on topic in this thread?

Otherwise I will split off the whole discussion of fixative spray into a separate thread.

Thanks!

Has anyone else had a chance to try these discs?

So far, compatibility with other DVD players is just as good as the non-glossy Verbatim DVD+Rs with MCC 04 codes. They work on my Panasonic S97 and Panasonic RP91 DVD players, and also work with an older VHS/DVD combo player.

A friend has had success using these with his Epson R800 as well - but I didn't test smudging yet - I'll try adding water to his discs and try to smudge it off when he isn't looking...to give those pigment inks a workout on this surface.

It's been a week since I printed on a test disc with my Epson R200. I did the wet finger of death test and as expected the ink comes right off.

I reminded my friend to do the same test on his discs printed with the Epson R800 - I'm hoping the pigment inks will fair better.

I burned, scanned and printed my first glossy Verb. The result looks great, but I have some reservations as well.

I noticed some marks on the surface, probably pieces of fluff or lint that have accumulated on the Epson R200's nozzles, but I never saw it on white printables.

As stated by RP, the ink comes off with a wet finger, but after I applied a thick layer of colour protection spray, this is no longer the case. The result looks like a top quality retail dvd.

About the recording: I used my BenQ 1655 to burn @12x. This resulted in a very good 97 QS. Only the PIE numbers rise a bit too much for my taste near the end (70 max, nearly 12 average).

All in all a great result, but rather expensive because of media cost and amount of spray needed, so I will reserve it for special items.

Yeah, I'm doing the same thing - holding off on printing except for special occasions. These discs are rather pricey - but not as expensive as the Primera Tuffcoat discs ($1.50 CDN each).

My friend finally did a water test with his pigment-printed disc with the Epson 800. No go - the ink comes off too! However, I think we he went too far - he ran water over it in the sink! Most of the colors ran off, and the disc is now black-and-white. It took a couple of days to dry off.

Uff, just had to open my DVD Player to retrieve one of these beauties...
I've printed them yesterday evening (about 20 hours ago) with my Epson R200.
Now I've tried to check the recordings and just the first disc don't came out again. The surface got stuck to the top of the disc's bearing and out came the empty tray... So, next time I'll wait much longer until I try to play them!

I would like to know, for labels that look like Dee's examples, how long does the ink last, disc wise.

Hi Taboo711 and welcome to the forum.

How long the ink lasts will partly depend on the printer and ink used. For Epson's own inks, Epson claim 10 years plus on this type of surface.

Sorry, I should have been a little more clear. Using Dee's as an example how long before the cartridges themselves run out?

Ah, I use the printer for other printing tasks, so measuring how much ink is used for printing a disc is not easy. It's not a large surface area, so at a guess, i would say it doesn't take a great deal of ink.

I've had the R300 for about 2 years, it doesn't get heavy use and i've replaced the Black cartridge 3 times and the individual colour cartridges twice.

if ink is a concern, comaptible cartridges are easily found for the epson R series printers. refill kits are always available or you could go all out and get a continuous ink system

Taiyo Yuden have released really nice glossy printables but these are waterproof directly off the spindle, no special sprays required!

Yes but right now only CDRs are available. DVDs will be released later in the year.

To avoid spray getting on the data surface, what is the best technique for spraying the coating on the disc? Someone mentioned using a cakebox and tilting the disc to a 45% position. I have had a problem (probably from too much spraying or at too close a range) getting overspray on the data surface and ruining the disc.

blankmedia.ca is selling new Verbatim hardcoat discs (waterproof). They put it in their glossy section - but glossy isn't mentioned in the actual description. SKU is 95398.

I'm surprised no one has had a chance to compare to these glossy Verbatims. Also, these hardcoat ones are cheaper!

Are all Verbatim glossy MCC03RG20? Or did they also reach MCC004?

Since MCC03RG20 does not work that good on my PX-760A (PowerRec slowdown to 8x e.g.) where the MCC004 give excellent results.

Could someone please post direct URL links and / or product numbers to these waterproof disks that may be available in the US?

I know a few people that would REALLY like to invest in getting some to try out.

Thanks

I appreciate ya posting the SKU - it will give me a place to start.

i heard that this verbatim glossy printable is not waterproof, is this true? will the ink smudge?

so is the verbatim hardcoat a better choice than verbatim glossy? i dont mind if its nt glossy, jus dont want to spray any color fixation spray onto the disc itself...

wow you woke up a dead thread, i ask this to every member why are you consern if its water proof or not? take care of the disc > dvd player > dvd case that simple. no need for speacial disc or liquid spraying.....

as for your answer i belive they are waterproof then again i dont use verbatim anymore but hardcocoat sounds intresting...

MIGHt i suggest Taiyo youden disc, theirs new one that are waterproof or someting important anyways their good

i am concerned as to if the color will cause the disc to stick to the paper envelope or cotton sleeve as i got too many discs to keep and cant afford to keep all of them in single individual slim cd case.

thus whether it is waterproof or not is impt as i dont want the disc to stick after keeping it for some time.... and singapore is a humid country so the humidity might have some effect on the disc....

well, also its personal preference too.... got it, taiyo yuden is good...

If you're talking about your printer settings, use CD/DVD or "Premium CD/DVD" settings. They should be printed with standard dye-based inks. Some printers will offer "photo" settings, and this is fine too.
