USB drive only shows up as CDROM, and cannot format it.

I am not sure of the brand, it doesn't have one on it, it just says "FPA Virtual Learning Center" on it, and when i plug it in, it says USB drive found, and only shows up as CDROM.

Partition Magic doesn't even show it as a drive, only shows my C: drive.

when i type format f: inside of cmd, it says something about not specifying a correct /fs switch to specify the file system, so when i try to put in format f: /FS:FAT it asks for volume label and when i put in anything it says "an incorrect volume label for this drive"

how can i make this a usable drive?

Thanks a million,
Stealth

HHD LLF doesn't even show the drive for the USB

when i plug it in, it says USB drive found, then when i look for it it shows up as a CD Drive. i finally got to the point where i got the format to go thru to the are you sure you want for format line.

it then says it is write protected after pressing Y

Just go and buy a new USB stick.
Your stick (note, you have exactly the same problem) is diguised as CD-ROM (similar to the U3 technique). It needs a lot of experience and tools to replace the firmware on that stick in order to make it a standard writeable device.
A 2 GB stick is available for 4 Euro, so there is really no need for that hassle (unless you are interested in the technology behind, but then you wouldn't have asked that question).

Hi there,

Found the solution to my problem on a flemish site... look for the "UFDUtility.exe" in Google (it's similar I guess to the U3 utility). I has allowed me to reallocate the memory from the CD-Rom part to the free Flash drive part.

It also has some nifty setup features for your pendrive.

Hope this is helpful, good luck.
Cheers, Patrick
