You remember about half a year ago? We were continously reporting about the war between HD DVD and Blu-ray. Most of us thought it would take some time before both would become mainstream, or either format would win. Now Blu-ray is the only survivor and retailers expect Blu-ray player sales will top the sales of standard-definition DVD players by this August.
Research firm NPD reported that sales of Blu-ray players (excluding the Playstation 3) fell 40% from January to February and climbed 2% from February to March, while in February Toshiba decided to pull the plug on HD DVD.
Retailers say that Blu-ray player sales have not picked up due to the lack of consumer interest but rather due a lack of supllies. According to them the demand for Blu-ray players has exceeded demand for 'normal' DVD players since the format war has stopped.
Expected is that when large suppliers such as Sony, Panasonic and Samsung launch new players prices of older models will go down and supplies will go up, both triggering more sales.
