Will Toshiba establish a new high-def format in China?

What is Toshiba planning to do in the nearest future? Breaking open the Chinese market by establishing CH-DVD, China High Definition DVD, as an accepted format on China's mainland. How will they do this and can we consider this as Toshiba's last weapon against Sony?

Toshiba has been actively preparing the Chinese market for the introduction of the Chinese HD DVD (CH-DVD), but had some problems after it set up the China High Definition DVD Industry Association in September 2007. This year, 2008, started of as a bad one after Warner's announcement. Because of Warner's choice Toshiba was surviving with a small amount of support from Hollywood.

Some believe that the loss of a few content providers means the end of HD DVD. This could be, but does anyone know if Toshiba has Chinese contracts? Because this would mean that they have enough Chinese content to sell through CH-DVD.

Sony has already tried to enter the Chinese market with players, but wasn't successful because of its high prices. Toshiba is expected not to enter the Chinese player market. According to a report from Sinocast, the Toshiba brand is expected to keep aloof from this.

Assuming that this is true, than Toshiba will only bet its money on a new Chinese HD DVD format called CH-DVD. If they want this to be a success, than they need to have enough content providers (especially Chinese) backing them.
