Sony upgrades its 710 series to 12x DVD-R and 4x DVD+R DL via firmware update

Great news for those of us which already own a Sony DRU/DRX 710 A/UL and want that the drive becomes faster in writing DVD-R and DVD+R DL. Sony published a new firmware that upgrades the drive to 12x speed for DVD-R and 4x speed for DVD+R DL writing.

Further has Sony made the drives Mac compatible, so the DRU 710A is now compatible with OS X version 10.2 or higher. According to Sharon Garner, Product Manager for Sony Optical Storage Products is this an important development for the 710 series and Sony is very pleased to be able to offer the DRX-710UL to Mac users the first time.

Sony has made its 710 Series double-layer DVD burner Mac-compatible, via a firmware upgrade.

But it is not just Mac users who benefit from the new updates. Another upgrade also increases single layer DVD-R burning from 8x to 12x, and the DVD+R DL burn speed can be boosted from 2.4x to a full 4x.

This is the first time I know that a company officially upgrades a drive to higher speeds. It's great to see that there are other strategies than to offer a new drive with improved firmware but identical hardware (NEC 2500/2510) and that a company is willing to upgrade a drive to higher speeds via firmware.
