Sony NEC Optiarc Europe officially opens for business April 2.

At the CeBit show, currently in progress in Europe, NEC and Sony have announced that they will begin doing business for the first time since they formed the partnership last April.  Based on the NEC chip technology and the extensive optical drive expertise of Sony, Optiarc Europe "will present a broad product range for the first time - from half-height and slim DVD drives through to blue laser products".  Current customers include almost all the major computer manufacturers.

In a related story, Sony has announced the release of four new optical drives.  Touted as "12th-generation units .. packed with high performance, supporting both dual and double layer formats" these units will all be part of a new 830 series.
