Slower Wifi during Christmas? It's the Christmas fairy lights!

Around Christmas Wifi networks might be slower than usual, UK telecom authority Ofcom warns. Wifi shares its spectrum with microwaves, baby monitors and also Christmas lights which causes interference. If you have a Wifi router using the 2.4Ghz band it's likely that the microwave's frequency (up to 3Ghz) can lower your Wifi throughput and the same applies to Christmas lights.

Also controller for trendy color changing lights can cause interference because they also use the 2.4Ghz band. Ofcom therefore recommends to use an app to check the signals in the 2.4Ghz spectrum around you and choose a channel on which not too much interference is expected. Another tip is to switch your router to 5Ghz mode which is usually less busy.

On the 5Ghz band there is also no interference of microwaves which go up to 3 Ghz. That should prevent Netflix from buffering when you are warming up a meal!
