My son was buring a DVD and it got an error where it couldn't read it. So we switched to Main Movie to get it to burn. That did work, but we lost the menu. I switched it back to Full Disc and burned a DVD later. It played properly in the DVD player hooked into the TV.

However, when my son tried to burn some Twilight Zone DVDs, he had to switch it over to Full Disc again and when we tried playing all 5 of them in the DVD player, it wouldn't load and came up with an error saying that the preview feature may be disabled. I do remember when I tried to play them on the computer, some error came up saying that DirectX or something like that wasn't on my computer. I was able to play them with my Nero Showtime player. They wouldn't play with the regular Windows Media player however.

Is there some sort of setting that has to be checked in order to get the DVDs to burn right? Thanks for the help.

Try by changing the burn engine from the default VSO to ImgBurn And here is a youtube video of how to set up Imgburn to work with DVDfab http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etHuT_XlJhM

I don't think the problems with the player connected to the TV and playing them on the PC are related. Windows Media Player is not equipped to play DVDs. You can download and install ffdshow (google it) and WMP should play them. You really don't need to do this if you already have player software that works.

As to the error message from the TV player, it is impossible to say. It is probably related to the settings used for making the backup copy, but could be one of a hundred other things (blank media, burn speed, etc.)

I'm looking for a setting on DVDFab 6.0 to change. I did notice that the checkmark for the non-DVD elements was not checked, so I checked that and still have the same problem. Not sure if I should try re-installing the program again. It worked fine until I changed it from Full Disc to Movie and then back again.

I've wasted 9 blank DVDs now and may have to go back to DVD Shrink until I somehow get this resolved.

DVDShrink is, unfortunately, an outdated program as far as copy protection removal is concerned. It can't really handle the ARcoSS and structural protection that is in fairly common use today with newer releases.

If you want to get started on getting Fab working for you, we're going to need some info.

What blank media are you using? (Mfr., -R/+R, Single or Dual Layer)
What version of Fab are you using?
What Operating System are you using?
What make DVD Drive are you using?
Can you, on your next post here, please include a log of your last UNSUCCESSFUL burn. - Logs can be found in C:\Documents & Settings\Your Name\My Documents\Applications\Dvdfab\Logs - The logs we need to see are the ones that start (more or less) Write Successful or Unsuccessful...

The other short entries you'll see in there are items generated each time you start Fab up - those don't tell us anything.

Thanks

OC

I would suggest you do just that to find out if the problem is really with DVDFab. With DVDShrink, use the same original disc (try only one), same blank media, same burn speed and other settings. Then you can troubleshoot DVDFab if need be.

I just upgraded to DVDFab 6.0.2.2 and am buring a new DVD. I'll see if this makes a difference. The thing is, I didn't have any trouble at all until I made a change to Main Movie mode. I did this as we were getting an error that the original DVD could not be read (even before we could burn). One thing we tried, without success, was to check mark to include non-DVD files in the copying process.

I will let you know if the newer version of DVDFab work. I am thinking it will.

I am currently using the updated DVDFab which I installed this morning in attempt to see if this works. I have a feeling it will. Didn't have any problems until one of the original DVDs I put in to copy wasn't being read, so I switched to Main Movie. That copied, but didn't have all the features. When I switched back, I got this error on my DVD player connected to my TV:

DISC ERROR:
Playback feature may not be enabled on this disc. Please eject the disc.

My computer has the Home Windows XP OS. The DVD writer is Samsung Super Writemaster. The DVD blank disc is TDK DVR +R 1-16 X speed / 4.7 GB

This is my complete log file you requested:

You are getting an unusual message from your player, which I take to mean that it could not find the IFO files or found them to be unreadable. Main Movie mode is not a good choice for TV episode discs, because it writes a very simple IFO file with only what it identifies to be the main movie title, which usually means only the longest episode will get copied from a TV episode disc and there will be no menus. Customize or Full Disc mode are better choices, or Customize Split if you want zero compression with the episodes split over 2 DVD-5 SL discs.

You burn log indicates that you are writing at high speed near the edge of marginal quality blank media. Try 8X burn speed instead. It also looks like there may be newer firmware (SB03?) available for your burner. Check the manufacturer's website. If you can locate TY or Verbatim blank media, you may get better results.

The average burn rate indicated in your log is also very low for some reason (4.15X for a 16X burn speed, indicating the drive did not actually burn at the requested/reported rate). Looks more like 6X.

I just burned 2 DVDs using the upgraded DVDFab 6.0.2.2. The first one was successful as it played on the DVD player. I had checked both boxes, DVD files and non DVD files. This was a TV show that I had been able to burn before.

The second DVD I just copied still had the same error as before. This was the same TV show where I got the errors before on 5 of the first 6 discs. The first disc of this series, I was able to burn and play OK. But this was before all the problems started. I am wondering if I check the box non-DVD files, if it will make a difference? I did it before on the DVDFab 6.0.1.0 with no success.

This is the log of my current buring sessions:

Again, the average burn rate is VERY low, indicating something funny with the drive/media/burning engine combination. Do not use Main Movie mode for TV episode discs. They should do fine with the modes I suggested in the earlier post. You should not need to copy the non-DVD files and it is usually better to leave them off unless it is just a JACKET_P folder.

I just tried buring that DVD on DVD Shrink. No problem. It plays just fine.

This is my question....I can burn other TV DVD series to blank DVDs and play them on my TV. This one particular series is giving me that error, outside of the first one I burned that plays. This is a series of 6 discs. I burned the first one and it is OK. Then I started having the problems. You say that I can change the speed of the burn settings to 8X. Should I try that?

I have just wasted 11 discs trying to burn this one TV series. If I try changing the setting to 8X, then that will be the final time I try that with this one particular TV show. As I said, it burned and played successfully on DVD Shrink.

Have you tried disabling PathPlayer which is not really necessary for TV series since they don't contain any special copyright protection, also switch burn engine in common settings from VSO(default) to ImgBurn if you have it installed.

Try just one disc and see if it plays instead of burning all of them at once. And yes, reduce the speed to 8X. VSO burning engine works fine for DVD-5 discs, I use it almost every day. Try ImgBurn if you are so inclined.

Might as well be pragmatic, and run with DVD Shrink for this TV series, as it seems to work for you.

DVD Shrink is going to have a very limited life with you, though, as development on that program stopped 2-3 years ago, and the program can't handle some of the newer copy protections out there. Eventually you're going to want to copy a disc that Shrink can't handle, and that's when you'll want to be ready with Fab.

There are several steps you should take:

1.) Get rid of the media you're using - it's borderline, and probably the major cause of your failed DVD player episodes for the Fab-done discs - get Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden for single layer burns, Verbatim only for dual layer burns.

2.) Go into 'Common Settings' in Fab (white check mark in the green circle on the main screen), go to pathplayer, and set as 'Always Enable'.

3.) Go to the write section, and set all record speeds as 'Recommended'.

4.) Google and download Imgburn (a freebie), probably the best burning program available, locate any post from Stormjumper, and in his signature are instructions for setting up Imgburn to work with DVDFab. When setting the record speeds, it's usually safe to set half the rated Max. speed as the recording speed.

5.) There's no one setting you can do with Fab that will accomplish what you want.

If a DVD has internet software, or some inter-active software on it (Disney does that a lot), checking the non-DVD material box will preserve that stuff for you. If you don't want it, or are unsure what it is, leave the box unchecked.

6.) If you have Nero, or some other burning software on your system, might be an idea to get rid of it, as it'll interfere with your burns.

7.) Google and download VLC Media Player (it also is a freebie), will play almost any audio/video file, can act as a DVD player for your computer, and is good to have around to check files right after a rip, in case the rip didn't go as smoothly as you thought it should.

Hope this helps.

As to the error message from the TV player, it is impossible to say. It is probably related to the settings used for making the backup copy, but could be one of a hundred other things (blank media, burn speed, etc.)
WMP plays DVDs fine on my PCs - I thought that v11 played DVDs with no extra codec downloads required, and also that it used any dvd player codecs that happened to be installed. I've used it successfully in the past to watch scratched/poor quality rental DVDs that froze in powerdvd, as it's seemingly more tolerant of errors and will keep playing through sections that powerdvd v7 chokes on.

back to OPs issue - could also try CLONE and Customised copy modes. they will both preserve menus and customise will let you copy only the large episode titles without any unnecessary crap that may be causing the problem.
There should be no need to include non-DVD elements in either case.

Thank you very much for you help. I just saved your help steps in a word document so I can do what you suggested.

Yes, I do have a Nero burning program on my computer. Is there a way to disable it as opposed to uninstalling it? You said that Imgburn would be a replacement for Nero?

I did purchase DVD Fab 6 so that I could use it, especially for the newer DVD movies and TV series which I have had some problems burning with DVD Shrink. I will take your advice on downloading Imgburn and VLC Media Player. On the whole, the burn process is much faster than DVD Shrink and I have been happy with it except for this one problem. Thanks again.

I have installed Imgburn, did the settings as Stormjumper had suggested and then checked the settings on DVD Fab. I set the burn engine to Imgburn, the write speed was already set to "recommended" but I didn't change the pathpayer to "always enable." I read where Stormjumper had said to disable that if I am having problems with the TV series. Should I still change that to "always enable"?

Are there any other settings that I need to change on either Imgburn or Fab?

If you have gone with the settings that are stated in the guide below called "Setup" you should be good to go, since DVD Shrink does not have or use PathPlayer and DVD Shrink works on those problematic disc I would try setting PathPlayer as "Disabled"

But that is just a suggestion and my .02 cents also try cleaning the disc, I have found that Fab can be a little picky at reading where shrink is not.

Go into "Services" located in "Computer Management" and set all entries for Nero to manual then stop all it's components works for me

Re Fab and Imgburn settings - leave them the way they are for the time being, and try a burn...if it fails, change the pathplayer setting to 'always enable', and try again.

Re Nero - Stormjumper's advice will work, but the main driver for Nero's Burning ROM is the IncD driver - a known issue causer with Fab and Imgburn.

It's fairly easy to see if it's present on your system. Go into Imgburn, go to Tools >Driver Load Order, and check the list that comes up for both lower and upper filters. If InCD is on that list, you can delete it by right-clicking on it and selecting 'delete'.

Bear in mind that without that driver, Nero will be rendered virtually useless. At this point, it doesn't much matter what you turn off or uninstall, as Nero won't be able to complete any job you ask it to start - but the InCD driver is the cause of all Nero problems with a system trying to use Fab or certain other copying software. (there are other things that can cause issues, such as virus-checkers, malware checkers, and certain Arcsoft drivers), but we can deal with those when we come to them.

Let us know how you make out.

If I can't use Nero, what program should I used to burn regular CDs then? I use Nero to put pictures and music on CDs, and to clean up my hard drive. I need some program to do the job then.

Also, when I copy a DVD, I will still use DVD Fab then, right? Not Imgburn.

After you install ImgBurn go into DVDFab's common settings-> Write and select ImgBurn as the burn engine, take a look below there is a guide called "Setup"...

also I have Nero 8 on my systems and use it from time to time without any issues so you can leave it on on your system without uninstalling it, however I myself never use it for video backups because it doesn't add the audio_ts folder to the disc but I use it for other projects
