Why won't disk play on my Xbox 360?

I backed up my copy of "The Dark Knight" to a Sony +R DL disk and it plays just fine on my computer, but it won't play on my xbox 360. Why?

I chose the option of copying all non-dvd files upon ripping (if that makes a difference). I also noticed it is in the UDF format (Universal Disk Format), and I found this article which says the Xbox 360 may have trouble playing this format if it is not burned the right way. It says to choose the "mastered" option for burning, but it only references the windows vista burning software.

I don't know if there is any different way to burn a movie to a disk except for the normal way. Can anyone give me some tips?

(and yes I have the latest version of DVDfab - 5.2.2.2)

You didn't mention in your post whether you used DVD - DVD to do the back up or DVD Mobile Option - XBOX.

It could make a difference, depending on which one you used.

Please advise.

Make sure you have the booktype to dvd-rom option set in dvdfab common settings

OK... have done a little research, and I think I have it straight, now.

The original Xbox, with the DVD Playback Kit, will play std., out-of-the-box store-bought DVDs, and their back-ups.

The newer Xbox 360, as conceived in Microsoft's infinite wisdom, will only play back *.wmv format video, using the installed drive in the Xbox. Playback (of store-bought DVDs) is possible by connecting a computer to the Xbox, playng the DVD on that, and relaying the signal through the Xbox to a TV.

So it look like your options are to either hook a computer up to your Xbox to get a DVD-DVD back-up to play, or, use the mobile option to create a file that can be written to a DVD and played back using the Xbox drive.

Hope this helps you at least a little...

Sorry to burst your bubble O'C, Xbox 360 can play back commercial DVDs as I tried that and it does play back copied DVDs as I tried that already also. The DVDs I played back for my copies were all booktyped to DVD-ROM

OK... I stand corrected...the specs I looked at didn't mention that - only that commercial DVDs could be played on an external device and routed through the Xbox.

It's good to know... now, I guess Iceman 2021's problem is media-related, if your fix doesn't work for him.

Thanx for the help - I'm here to learn, too.

well my Xbox 360 is new just got it yesterday and still tinkering with it to learn everything. The first thing I tried was playing my DVD backups and my DVDs. Still trying to get the media extender to keep working but I will figure that out. Also right now I am doing the Xbox 360 mobile conversion to see how it works

Re: Why won't disk play on my Xbox 360?

well I did what you said GJ and it still sadly doesn't work... I know it can play burned dvd's because i have like around 20 and my 360 plays them all.

I remember I burned casino royale the exact same way and it worked...

Maybe it's because I burned all those with standard DVDs. I'm using a dual layer disk now (sony brand), so maybe that is the problem... I swear if sony tried pulling some bs like "we're not going to let people play sony dvd's on their xbox" crap then I'm never gonna buy from sony again... But hopefully it's just a problem with it being dual layer.

The only recommended DL is verbatim anything else is maybe try using ImgBurn as the burn engine instead of VSO. I will give a DL disc a try now and psot in a bit

Ok, Just tried and a DL verbatim +R booktyped to DVD-ROM works so it must be the media and maybe the burn engine as I used ImgBurn for this disc I tried

Re: Why won't disk play on my Xbox 360?

Thanks for all the help GJ, I really appreciate it. And I think you're right, I think it is a problem with the software just not being able to burn it to where the xbox 360 can play it in combination with it being dual-layer. I'll try out some diff programs and post back later to tell you if it worked.

Thanks again for the help
