I see alot of questions & answers on this forum regarding PIO mode and in Common Setting I should "Reset the DMA", which I do.

All my logs that I made backup copies on both PC's show PIO Mode.

My question: How would you change modes with SATA drives?

Thank you

Hello Andrew

If you have your machine set up in IDE Mode (in the PC's BIOS), then PIO/UDMA modes can apply with SATA drives. My other (SATA/IDE) machine is set up that way.

If your logs are showing PIO mode, then resetting the DMA is a good idea.

SATA will show PIO Mode in the log and in the BIOS but there is no such thing on SATA Drives if I remember correctly?

This is just a follow up: I looked into BIOS and I didn't see any reference to PIO/UDMA, so I'll just leave things as they are. I never had any problems with DVDFab since I started using it about a year ago and I can't complain about the speeds regarding reading & writing of my backup copies.

Thanks again you guys

The movie I backed up was Semi Pro (100min) using "Main Movie" on a single layer Verbatim 16x. I just watched it on a DVD player and a TV and the movie backed up perfect.

did you build the computer? if not what is the brand and version? i want to find out what chipset your computer is using. what drivers are you using?

please try a different sata port, check cables including power cable, check all connections.

check windows event log viewer for errors?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942910/en-us

uninstall the ide controller from device manager.
start/ run/ devmgmt.msc/ ide controllers

do you have any starforce games installed?

Troy: #1-I have a Dell XPS 420 Intel Dual Core 3.16GHz and a Dell 410 Intel Dual Core 2.66GHz. Both are installed with Windows Vista Home Premium & Service Pack 1

#2-SATA cables were checked

#3-start/run/devmgmt.msc/ ide controllers (Comes back: Windows can not find devmgmt.msc.........)

#4-There are no Error Messages

#5-There is no reference to IDE CONTROLLERS in either Bios or Device Manager

#6-There are no Starforce games on either PC

It's my understandering that resetting DMA in Common Settings so it is not in PIO mode supposedly will get the best out of your DVD drives when making a backup copy of a dvd. I just made a backup copy of a 100 minute dvd movie in Movie Mode with ripping, writing and finalization in under 12 minutes and showed perfect on a DVD player. By not being in PIO mode, would I have gotten better than that?

Thank you
Andrew

I don't think your drive is actually in PIO mode. You would not have the excellent completion times or read/burn speeds that your logs reflect if it were. Something in the setup of your PC is confusing the software. Please upgrade to DVDFab v5.0.5.5, the burning engine in the version you have is buggy. Check a burn log after the update and see if the message is still there. In addition to slow burn speeds, an optical drive in PIO mode will often have trouble communicating with the burning engine, the symptoms of which can include incorrect lists of available burn speeds, improper/incomplete finalization of discs and more. If your hard drive were in PIO mode, your PC would take forever to boot and all programs would load/run slowly.

Signals, thank you for your input. I did find out why PIO Mode showed up in my log.

I downloaded 2 patches & fixes for my SATA drives from Dell Downloades & Drivers. The 2 patches I downloaded and installed were: Intel Application Matrix Storage Manager and Intel Driver For Matrix Storage manager. Not only did these 2 pataches eliminate the PIO MODE in my log it took 10 min & 30 sec make the same dvd backup that took 11min 50 sec with PIO MODE.

Thanks again Troy and Signals

Given that piece of info, I'd say the same as signals - your drives aren't in PIO Mode. On my other PC I mentioned, where it's set up as IDE mode in the BIOS, I *do* have multiple IDE channels in my Device Manager, so clearly your PC isn't set up the same way

BTW, I have a Dell also, and it's not set to IDE mode, but rather SATA mode, in the BIOS, just like yours.

Great to hear you found the culprit ...I use the Intel Matrix Storage drivers too, so it's handy for me to know

BTW Signals, I did upgrade to 5.0.5.5 the first day it came out but yet it shows 5.0.5.0 in the log. In fact I uninstalled & reinstalled 5.0.5.5 about 4 times. It still showed up as 5.0.5.0 in the log. In the actual DVDFab window (?) it does say 5.0.5.5 so I assume I've been using 5.0.5.5.

Does anybody else have 5.0.5.0 in their logs after they upgraded to 5.0.5.5?

Thank you

I just got back from a business trip and haven't burned anything yet with 5.0.5.5, but if it says that in the main window, you should be fine. It could be an oversight, or may be because 5.0.5.5 installs an earlier version of the burn engine to replace the buggy one.

My "guess" exactly...
beat me again, pard...

@Alexia75, just to confirm your assumption...
I just burned a file using platinum 5.0.5.5 and the burn log shows 5.0.5.0, so my good friend signals' surmise is spot on as usual.
I see it the same way...it is related to the VSO "rollback".
Essentially, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

@Alexia75,

Just an FYI, completed a burn with the latest update, platinum 5.0.5.8 Beta. The log now displays the correct version.

Hey guys, I'm researching some performance problems here, Where do I find the log files?
The only one I found shows entries such as shown below, problem is, I just used fab to rip a dvd to an ISO on an NEC burner and that isnt showing up in the log - are there multiple places these show up?
