My girlfriend just gave me some DVD's to backup for her and I said sure no problem, so I thought
popped in disc 1 of 9 and fired up DVDFab and it gave me my very first read/write error so I took it out and gave it a good cleaning and tried it again and got the same message I even tried DVD Shrink and got a no go so I opened Nero Disc speed and ran a scan on it thinking it had bad sectors which was not the case cause I got a clean bill of health

After scratching my head I opened it up using Windows Explorer and got a shock not only did it have both the VIDEO_TS and the AUDIO_TS folder it also had a third folder called VIDEO_RM
So I started up another program which I also have a lifetime registration to, and I can back them up without any problems
Just goes to show you it is good to have other tools in the old toolbox

BTW...anyone run into the extra VIDEO_RM folder ? it's a new one on me

RMs seem to be related to Philips playback dvd recorders. These files are useless to other players and even make such DVDs incompatible with some DVD players. So I'm not surprised that it makes such DVDs copy unfriendly...

I will now modify my prior statement..

RMs seem to be related to TV recorders playback dvd recorders and timeshift functions (Philips and some other brands). These files are useless to some other players and even make such DVDs incompatible with some DVD players. So I'm not surprised that it makes such DVDs copy unfriendly... So much for DVD standards! Lets adapt and find DVD ripers that will maka abstraction of such files.

But even worst, Some of these recorders only burn two files : Video_TS and Video_RM... No more Audio_TS ! There is never a dull moment in surprise land. And don't count on these corporations to advertise about these subtilities on the box to inform you on the pruduct you buy.

To be continued...

Seems that Handbrake (not the one in your car but http://handbrake.fr) will make abstraction of those problems. Check it out.

Well thanks for the run down
good thing I don't let this kind of things stand in my way the program I'm using has no problem copying them minus the RM folder, would be nice if DVDFab wouldn't choke on DVD's that contain RM folders but oh well as long as the job gets done

When DVDFab ever chokes on me which is very rare I fall back on Magic DVD Ripper it's my 2nd choice tool which works great it even does converting with a built-in profile editor also does single vob backups
