I have had a much greater rate of success than 50% with the combination of AnyDVD and Nero Burning ROM. My theory is that there is some metadata contained on the disk that cannot be represented in an ISO file that is captured by a Nero NRG file. I can modify the IFO files to skip the commercials and allow all user operations (like skipping the FBI warning) and the DVD is still recognized by ClearPlay. However, if I try to compress the video to fit on a DVD-5 disc, it is never recognized.

ClearPlay has been unresponsive to my queries. If I knew the formula, I could save money on dual-layer DVDs and have a higher rate of success.

I guess the rate of success depends on what discs you've tried.

I agree that a recompressed movie never works - nor would I expect it to, since the frames would be different. Most movies have to be copied straight to a DL disc (the rare exception are movies where the original is a DVD-5 disc).

You are right, infoman. That statement is essentially based on personal experience. It is a rarity for me when a backed up disc does not work with ClearPlay.

Once, when we first got it, we made a backup of King Kong, but it did not work with ClearPlay. About a year later I could not find the backup, so I made another and to my surprise it worked. Perhaps an update to AnyDVD, Nero, or even ClearPlay itself made the difference.

I still think the AnyDVD/Nero combination has a greater success rate than DVDFab. A while back you posted a list of movies that worked/did not work with ClearPlay and one of those you had listed as not working, I had got to work with AnyDVD and Nero. I apologize that I do not remember the specific title. I think it was National Treasure 2. My ClearPlay does not work right now, but when I get a replacement, I will test it again, if you want to know the specific title.

As far as compressed movies go, I do not know why the frames would be different. Each frame would be compressed more, but there should still be the same number of frames. I just figured the metadata ClearPlay looks for somehow gets lost when recoding.

It would be interesting to make a comparison, now that I have been through some more backup attempts.

I guess on the recompressed movies I figured that some frames would be dropped.

I'm wondering if a different angle would work on this. Has anyone been able to or even tried to reverse-engineer the clearplay files? I think it would be great if you could pick an iso, pick the clearplay file, choose your options, and have it spit out a new iso with the options set.

I'm pretty sure that the law that makes clearplay legal also says a program that creates permenant copies of these edits isn't legal but I would think a program that just creates a list of edits would be fine.

This is really the ideal solution for me since it would A) allow me to use windows media center to play the movies instead of having to burn and use the the clearplay player. B) Make an MP4 that could be streamed to my extenders with the edits.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

I saw that and sent an email earlier today. It just seems with clearplay's large library and customizable filter levels it would be a good place to start. I haven't done any reverse-engineering for years either. Hopefully the pcnoevil will work for what I need or someone with more time and skill than I have can try their hand at getting the data out of the clearplay files.

So as far as I can tell this thread still hasn't accomplished the "copying DVD's that will be recognized by a ClearPlay DVD player", completely. So as well all wait for some programmer to come along and help us

    Hi dickalan

I have edited your post because you was talking about copying rented DVD's which is a no no here at MyCE, please read the rules of this forum before posting again.

OK, well *eh em* (clearing throat) you could just play your rated R DVD that you own on your clearplay, and create a backup of it by using the component cables going out of the player into your computer and capture the edited version.

You of course would lose any actual DVD structure. Unless there is a way to extract the DVD movie and reinsert the edited one...

Regardless of that, is there really nobody that can explain where the information is stored on a DVD that tells a DVD player the name of a movie, or that cares about whether DVDFab (this is their support forum, right?) is truly able to make a 1:1 clone of a movie that includes all the information that a person might want to have on their backup copy?

I do appreciate the responses I've received so far. Thanks for even reading this.
I am concerned about what my grandchildren watch so I do the responsible thing. I watch the movies FIRST and if I find anything unacceptable for the children I don't let them watrch the movie.

Well, I guess I'm the exception to every film studio marketer who's trying to target the demographic of a 26 year old male. Cause I have no desire to sit through a film that is full of nudity or a ton of vulgarity.

Roadking's solution doesn't apply to me cause I'm not screening it for a younger audience. I'm doing it for myself !!! I've been using clearplay for about 1 1/2 years now and I'm convinced that the petty crap they throw into movies adds NOTHING to a film. It's just as good without. I would have no use for it but they're a lot of really good STORIES that are rated R. Clearplay also works so well that it doesn't just chop out entire scenes and you have no idea what's going on in the next. It's all edited perfectly how you want it !! I love it !!

OK, that's my rant. Since this thread title isn't about morals or if Clearplay is a good or bad thing, from now on I'll stick to the topic at hand.

I hope to see this develop more in the future...

OK, I just "Cloned" my first working Clearplay DVD. This is how I did it:

I read and referenced this page: http://www.dvdfab.com/docs/index.php/Main/DVDToDVDClone

    1) Using DVDFab Platinum 7.0.3.0 under "DVD to DVD" I choose "Clone". I made sure to un-tick the box "Copy DVD-Video Data Only" and I made sure I did tick the box "Copy Original IFO Files" (MOST IMPORTANT PART).

    2) Since I didn't have ANY dual-layer blank DVD's to burn I looked around the house for some DVD 5's rather than DVD 9's to rip. So the only single layer movie I could find that was also on Clearplay's compatibility list: http://clearplay.com/PrintList.aspx was "While You Were Sleeping".

    3) I ripped it with dvdfab, then used Nero's "Burn Image To Disc" option-- I also made sure its "Label" was the same name DVDfab gave it. I burnt it.

I put it into the Clearplay and the filters were loaded, unlike all my previous attempts!!!

One thing I thought that was kind of interesting is on the actual DVD of "While You Were Sleeping" right there in large print it says "Stock# 13680" which is the same number on Clearplay's compatibility list (13680).

I know its already been mentioned, but does that number have something to deal with ripping and burning it correctly?

Anyway, this is only my first disc and supposedly other studios don't work... I'll be giving them a whirl. Oh, by the way this was distributed through "Hollywood Pictures, Home Video"....
