Great piece of software, thank you.

I've run into the following behavior (which I think is different from the previous version).

Using the DVD to Mobile, using "generic" and "zune" profiles:

When trying to queue 2 conversions, if the output file for the first one already exist the program will cancel that Task. I would expect it to give a "do you want to overwrite the file / don't ask again" prompt (as it does for the 2nd conversion for example).
I think the previous version did ask for the overwrite option on the first task instead of automatically canceling it.

Again cheers, great product

This is what I ran into with this version. I'm useing the Gold version. When copying College Road Trip useing the DirectShow in Preview the picture was scrambled at the start, so I quit. I changed the Preview to Internal and tried again and all was very good. Could be they need to take another look at this function of the program. I could be the only one with this problem as no one has said anything about this.

Look and see if your DirectShow decoders are set to the DVDFab video and audio decoders (Common Settings->Preview).

Signals, yes it is. I have no other installed, just what comes with the program. It stays the same if I have Internal or DirectShow checked. I also should have said I copied the movie with no errors poping up and when I tried it out is when the picture was bad. After I tried it with Internal checked and tried it out it was fine.

Does the backup disc play OK on your TV or in your PC?

VOB passthrough direct from DVD completes immediately creating a zero size file. No error message generated much like the mobile problems in 5.0.5.8. Problem occurs with both the original DVD and a backup on DVD+R (ripped using DVDFab, encoded using Nero 6). Problem is not specific to any particular movie. I'm not sure if this was already an issue or new to this version.

I can get around the issue by first ripping DVD using movie only and then using VOB passthrough from the DVD folder works. Rather inconveint for those titles that I already have a backup and just want to create a file for streaming.

I have tried two discs, an original and a backup, and VOB Passthrough works normally for me with 5.0.6.0. I have it set up in the UI as a device with its own menu button, so I am not using it through Generic (which should not matter).

Signals, when I copy with DirectShow enabled it will play with a DVD player but with scrambled picture in places. When I copy with the Internal enabled the play back is fine on Tv.

So I guess I'll have to wait until someone else has the same problem since it is works for you. I'm using Windows XP Pro by the way.

I'll also try again from a clean startup later. The new remember UI feature sometimes create some odd behavior.

Sorry you are having trouble. DVDFab no longer has a clean base state, makes it very difficult to troubleshoot. I hope they can make it defeatable or add a "clear UI memory" button so that users can get back to ground zero.

I'm still trying to figure out how to reliably get subtitles on, and I think I'm getting closer.

Here are some observations and feedback:

1. The Subpicture UI seems to have 2 modes:
1a. The checkbox. I believe this only affects the "Display only forced subtitles" options
1b. Selecting the supbicture you want. For this you click it with the mouse and it will invert the colors (blue background, white letters). without doing this I believe you'll get no subtitles.

The confusing part is that if the checkbox is checked, BUT the subpicture is not selected AND the checkbox of "display only forced subtitiles" is NOT checked... I don't think you get subtitles, even though you see a 'check' next to the one you think you want.

I'm not sure when I would want to use the 'display only forced subtitles' option. When would that be necessary?

2. Per Task settings.
If you're doing several conversions at once, then I think you have to go back and forth and make sure the subtitles are on for every task.

3. Quasi-persistent UI state.
The UI seems to preserve some settings some of the time, but not consistently.
For example: Set up 2 tasks, both with subtitles on and start the conversion. After a few minutes cancel it and play the resulting file to make sure the subtitles are on.
Now if you go back to try to restart the conversion I found that the subtitle options have been cleared, and furthermore it seems I can't turn them back on again
I've had to restart the program to get back to a state where I can select subtitles again.

Feedback: It would be nice to have a column for the subtitles state before starting the Tasks, this would take the guesswork out of figuring out what will go into the conversion.

I'm assuming you mean all of the above as it applies to DVD to Mobile and will respond accordingly. DVDFab's default selection of subpicture streams is controlled in Common Settings->Streams->Subpicture, not by (I don't think) the new UI memory feature. If your settings on that page are such that, for instance, on a R1 DVD no subpictures are selected, you will have to manually set them each time for each DVD. If in the same case your settings always select an English subpicture, it should always be selected unless you manually DEselect it by removing the checkmark in the stream's selection box . Simply highlighting a stream is not enough to select it so that it appears in the output, but will make it show up in the Preview window (applies to DVD to DVD and DVD to Mobile). The "Display only forced..." box is used to make the conversion display only the subpictures that have a forced start, such as the French/Latin/Italian translations in The DaVinci Code and movies where the translations are handled in a similar way, instead of the entire subpicture stream (which will create subtitles for all dialogue). If the subpicture area on the Conversion Settings page does not say "Direct Render to Video", you will not get any subtitles in the video output regardless of any other setting. There should not be a situation where putting a checkmark in the subpicture stream selection box either can't be done or does not produce subtitles (unless you also check the Display Only Forced box and there are none that are forced).

P.S. Selecting more than one subpicture stream or some very large output screen sizes would in earlier versions cause no subtitles to be displayed in the output. I have not tested this recently. Subs that have been modified with DVDSubEdit also sometimes do not render correctly in DVD to Mobile.

It is looking more and more likely that the UI memory feature is part of the problem. If I rip a DVD to the hard drive and try to rip the another DVD using vob passthrough then I get the zero byte file(s). To fix the problem, I simply close DVDFab and open it again. At that point passthrough is remembered and things rip normally.

Doesn't work:
  • First DVD to HDD
  • Second DVD to VOB passthrough (zero size file(s))
Works:
  • First DVD to HDD
  • Second DVD to HDD
  • Second HDD copy to VOB passthrough
Also works:
  • First DVD to HDD
  • Second DVD to VOB passthrough (zero size file(s))
  • Restart DVDFab
  • Second DVD to VOB passthrough (works this time)
In all cases, I have path player set to always on.

@Complication
I didn't try it exactly the way you did. I'll try that and see what happens.

I am voting to either remove the "UI memory feature" or have a method to turn it off.

I can't recall paying for 2 licenses but I've always had DVD FAB on both computers as long as I've had them.

Update for Signals. I do think I found out my problem for the bad playback of my burns. Sometimes it very hard to figure out what the problem might be when you do not get any read/write errors. Anyway, I was useing a Philips burner, so I had a Lite-on burner put back. I changed them out and the burn copy's came out good. I'm finding out the Philips brands are a good one to stay away from. I thank you for trying to give me help, and others also.
