I purchased DVDFAb Platinum 3.0.9.8 a couple of days ago. I successfully made a backup of Casino Royale. Problem is, all future DVDs I put into my drive are now identified by DVDFab as Casino Royale.

If I restart my computer (it may take a few tries) and insert a different DVD, DVDFab may correctly identify my new DVDs, like Constantine. But then the problem will repeat itself, identifying all future DVD movies I put in my drive as Constantine.

I believe DVDFab will still copy the DVD successfully, but I can't tell if it copied the proper volume title as well. Windows Explorer seems to be confused as well. All my DVDs are showing up as Casino Royale, or Constantine, or whatever the last 'stuck' DVD title is.

(Note: I tried DVDDecrypter--even though its support has been discontinued--and it identifies DVD Volume titles correctly.)

Anyone else have this problem? Is there a solution?

Here's my system: Toshiba laptop running Windows XP SP 2. DVDFab Platinum 3.0.9.8 purchased online and installed.

This is my first time posting here, so please be gentle. I apologize in advance for any mistakes. Thanks.

Isn't this a bug in Windows? I think I remember this because they said AnyDVD fixes it.

Sometimes MS Windows seems to have a problem realizing that removable media has been replaced, and behaves as if whatever was in the drive previously were still there; at least, that's been my experience with MMC/SD cards. Maybe try using MS Windows Explorer to eject the DVD.

Like Stormjumper, I have never had this happen and never seen another post reporting this symptom. DVDFab rewrites all DVD Volume names as [DVD_VOLUME]. If you are seeing anything else it is a Windows issue. Try going to Common Settings-->Read and see how your I/O control is set (at the top of the window). If it is still at the default "Auto", try changing it first to SPTI and if that doesn't help, try ASPI. Perhaps your ASPI driver is corrupted.

Thank you all for your responses and suggestions! I'm away from my laptop at the moment. I'll try these suggestions in the evening.

StormJumper, I'll try the beta. Since I have sigs and avatars turned off (I have a slow connection), is there a direct link on how I can completely uninstall older copies of DVDFab?

linx05, thanks for the response. I don't have AnyDVD installed on my system, and since my laptop is rather old (P4 2.8 GHz), I'm wary of installing new programs. The most recent program I installed before DVDFab was tax software because I had no choice.

James_50, MS Windows in the past had trouble reading my SD cards and USB drives. Then I installed the complete offline version of SP2 (I had to grit my teeth and dig really deeply into Microsoft's website to find the thing). Now Windows reads my cards and USB drivers perfectly. What's puzzling is that Windows reads DVD volume titles successfully with DVD Decrypter, but it stumbles with DVDFab. Maybe DVDFab simply needs a complete reinstall.

signals, ASPI drivers have not played nice with my system in the past. I'll try changing "Auto" to SPTI to see if it helps. If it doesn't, can you show me an easy way to install/update my ASPI drivers?

Thanks for all your help. You guys really make this a great forum.

(Off-topic questions: Is there a way to change the color scheme for this forum? Beige and gray-blue is a neat neutral scheme, but I'm more used to the navy and white palette. Also, clicking the "change font color" button doesn't do anything when I compose a post. Is this a Firefox bug? Thanks!)

Oops. I'm terribly sorry. I didn't realize that I can view your sig by viewing your public profile. The instructions provided look straightforward. I'll let you know how things go. Thanks again!

I've had this happen several times. Normaly if I close the program and then bring it back up it works right, but not always. Open and close dvd tray with new movie at same time usually fixes it.

DONVAN, thanks for letting me know that I'm not the only one with this problem!

Sometimes DVDFab will identify the new DVD if I open and close the tray several times. Last night, though, it rarely identified the correct movie title no matter how many times I opened and closed the DVD drive. This evening, I'm going to do a complete uninstall of DVDFab Platinum and install the new beta. I'll let you know what happens.

I wasn't suggesting to download AnyDVD but merely I was trying to diagnose the problem.

I have this issue as well.

DVD Decrypter gets the label correct every time though. So, whatever Decrypter is doing seems to be more reliable than relying on windows to get it correct.

This was changed recently to cope with DVDs that use what are to windows illegal characters in the name, causing crashes.

I have had it happen a few times, but have either refreshed or closed and reopenned Fab. Even when the name is wrong fab analizes the correct movie. It is probably a result of windows not releasing the memory where the Name is stored.

Why not just translate the characters instead? Then you could read the name from the disc reliably and not crash either.

It seems to me that you don't need to choose between crashing on a minority of discs, or failing to get the name right on most discs.

In software predictability is more important than any other design consideration. The current methodology has unpredictable behavior.

I have also experienced this problem on a few occasions and I agree with bigmacnc as to the reason it's occurring.

I think the the real cause is my not completing all the steps to finish the burn, not allowing it to free up that memory. I am inpatient, but noticed when I slow down the program works better.

I have the same problem. The only way I can correct it is to close the program and reopen it between copying. Refresh (F5) or any other usual PC trick does not make the program re-read the DVD and update the source name.
