CD-reading This drive seems to be a very good CD reader. This rather bad disc used for testing came with a Liteon LH18A1P, you can see how other drives did with this challenge here http://club.cdfreaks.com/1810122-post98.html
Taiyo Yuden, Type 1, 700MB, 48x, as sold by Plextor 48x CAV writing speed selected, slowdowns as per writing graph below. 5074 C1 errors. Log-In of the disc in a PX-760 or Premium 2 causes a lot of seek operations. comparison to LG GSA-H44N: http://club.cdfreaks.com/1768738-post2.html Below are writing, C1/C2/CU, Beta/Jitter and readback scans in the Premium 2:
Mitsubishi Chemicals Corporation, Type 3, 700MB, 52x as sold by Verbatim 48x CAV writing speed selected, slowdowns as per writing graph below 11911 C1 errors. Log-In of the disc in a PX-760 or Premium 2 causes a lot of seek operations. comparison to LG GSA-H44N: http://club.cdfreaks.com/1768739-post3.html Below are writing, C1/C2/CU, Beta/Jitter and readback scans in the Premium 2:
Ritek, Type 7, 700MB, 52x as sold by Maxell 48x CAV writing speed selected, slowdowns as per writing graph below 11911 C1 errors. Log-In of the disc in a PX-760 or Premium 2 causes a lot of seek operations. Below are writing, C1/C2/CU, Beta/Jitter and readback scans in the Premium 2:
Conclusion CD writing/reading Error rates are low and all discs produce a perfect 52x tranfer-rate curve. Looking at the scans alone the CD writing capability looks very good. However there remains the Log-In problem. There seems to be some issue with the quality/compatibility of the Lead-In (and -Out) this drive writes. Currently I wouldn't use this drive for quality CD writing. On the other hand, CD reading looks excellent. This drive looks like a very good choice for data salvation/ripping.

Taiyo Yuden -R 16x (TYG03) sold as Panasonic Burn speed 16x CAV, slowdowns as per writing graph. Writing, CDSpeed (S202N), Burst, Sum1, Beta/Jitter scans (PX-760):

Sony +R 16x (Sony D21) as sold by Sony Burn speed 16x CAV, slowdowns as per writing graph. Burn done with drive connected via external USB-to-IDE bridge (Jmicron chipset). CDSpeed (S202N), Burst, Sum1, Beta/Jitter scans (PX-760):
Sony -R 16x (Sony 16D1) as sold by Sony Burn speed 16x CAV, slowdowns as per writing graph. Burn done with drive connected via external USB-to-IDE bridge (Jmicron chipset). CDSpeed (S202N), Burst, Sum1, Beta/Jitter scans (PX-760):
Conclusion DVD writing and quality scanning Except for some higher PIE errors on the -R Verbatim and some higher PIF erros on the -R Yuden (which seems to be media related, since i see that on other drives too) the results look very good. Quality scanning compared to the PX-760 shows quite different results for the most part. While one cannot expect the drives to agree in absolute terms (number or errors) it's interesting to see the drive don't even agree in tendency, most notable in the -R Verbatim burn.
Addendum to the CD Log-In problem The same phenomena also shows in the Samsung itself and in an LG-H44N too.
CMC Magnetics -R 16x (CMC MAG AM3) as sold by Philips (labeled made in Taiwan) Burn speed 18x CAV selected, slowdowns as per writing graph. CDSpeed (S202N), Burst, Sum1, Beta/Jitter scans (PX-760):

Comparing scanning capabilities A rather bad burn dating from 2005. The Plextor sees quite a bit more errors. Burst and Sum1 in PX-760, CDSpeed in S202N:
TDK +R 16x (CMC MAG M01 0) as sold by TDK Burn speed 16x CAV selected, slowdowns as per writing graph. Quite different scanning results. CDSpeed (S202N), Burst, Sum1, Beta/Jitter scans (PX-760):
TDK -R 16x (TTH02) as sold by TDK Burn speed 16x CAV selected, slowdowns as per writing graph. CDSpeed (S202N), Burst, Sum1, Beta/Jitter scans (PX-760):

Don't have the S202* burner but S203* series burn all my CD's perfect. Honestly, I don't understand what you like to tell us with expressions like; "quality/compatibility" of "Lead-In (and -Out)"... BTW, IIRC CD/DVD Speed "create data disc" is written in DAO (disc at once) isn't it? Drage correct me please if I'm wrong. |
