2 Stars of 5. Engineering beta-state or production quality faulty product.

# Bought because of good reference from friend of older LG DVD-RAM drive but this product is very dissapointing, would not buy again, will return-in for RMA. Had better bought NEC again, but did not because my 3520AW has got tray mechanics issues loading media.

# Use: Bought for Digital Video Recorder (VDR) usage, usable with care and advanced end user knowlegde. Don't use if You need a uncomplicted handling 16X drive and without knowledge of Raw Media.

# Product features: See Pros+Cons (link above), >8X not available at least with MBI 01RG40, MCC/004 media using Nero,K3b,brasero,gnomebaker,growisofs, burns canceled with servo tracking errors. Insufficent drive meda coupling mechanics or servo design mismatch (Servo-misregulation error overdrive hearable at power-on with medium inserted).
Firmware cannot handle multiple access of media change pollers and burn softwares or faulty MMC-3/4 implementation, SATA controller gets irritated on ending burn with k3b forcing host adapter in reset loops switching SATA down to PIO0 mode under some circumstances but UDMA33 is needed.

# Design: Better than average. Good materials quality. Nice Labels.

Fails 16X Test with CMC MAG/M01, too.

Drive recalibrates for minutes at Lead-In, then Nero burns and verifys ok.

k3b is not that patient and does not suppress critical device errors to protect manufacturers from warranty claims:

@ woppr,

In many instances CMC Magnetics Corporation CMC MAG M01 Media has proven to be problematic Media.

Suggest obtaining known proven quality error free Media such as Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim Media which has an excellent track record of consistently providing quality error free results.

From your above quoted referenced statement it is clearly obvious that you have either SATA Controller configuration and/or compatibility problem. You cannot expect a SATA devise to function/operate at optimal performance when the SATA Controller is malfunctioning.

Correct the cause of your SATA Controller malfunction and your LG GH22NS40 will perform at its optimal performance.

Regards,
bjkg

The disable is confirmed by a windows user, too, so OS is not involved here:
http://club.cdfreaks.com/f91/gh22ns3...indows-275420/

hal polling is disabled.

The drive controller, not the host adapter is faulty.

The SATA problem occurs on 2 different host adapters, promise20579 + via8237:
(...)
The drive controller, not the host adapter is faulty.
Via 8237 is buggy, especially with optical drives. There are lots of problem reports here on the forums.

As for the Promise, works for me. I have a TSST SH-S203B connected to that controller without problems. Might be a controller Bios issue if it does not work for you. Out of curiosity: What motherboard is involved?

You may consider using a Silicon Image 3512 based controller card with non-Raid Bios like Delock 70096 (must be flashed to Base Bios then).

And? Your drive works with the host, the LG not. So we are where we were.

Could also be an issue of the controller Bios which is part of the motherboard Bios. I assume, you have configured the Promise as "Sata", not Raid.

Have you already tried another Sata cable? I am asking, since I had similar problems with a HDD (dropping to PIO) that could be solved by replacing the Sata cable.

It could also be a bad drive.

Okay. I think, "back to vendor" should be considered then.

LG does a really great RMA process:
You have to send-in to a third party servicer "SKR" who does hide his terms&conditions until they claim no warranty case then and present a bill to pay to get the drive back, NO WAY!

Especially not if the package included Nero for Windows burns successfully with 20X (did not let me choose other speed) on the same 16X(!) Verbatim media, Nero for Linux 3 not

and after that the Linux burners (growisofs) burn successfully >8X too

Does OEM Nero have exclusive special access to proprietary vendor drive functions to do some extra media calibrations and other "initialization"?

@ woppr,

Evidently the “Linux” “K3B “KDE” environment is different than the Windows environment.

I see not statement in LG literature that the LG GH22NS40 Optical Drive will operate in Linux but I do see statements the LG GH22NS40 Optical Drive works in Windows.

bjkg

Well, if your controller is supported properly under Linux, I see no reason why it shouldn't work.

That's ugly.
Return to vendor isn't possible anymore?

Yes but I keep it and wait for Firmware update and will inform the linux-scsi/ata developers list.
They will always adapt with quirks to problematic hardware, as usual, support is great.

@bjkg
Not stating Linux support in doc or offer is for law (GPL-issues) only.
Every vendor without Linux support will suffer from significant market loss since Ubuntu is in.

The last patches for Linux 2.6.30 adapted to such buggy drive SATA-Interfaces, so I do not need the Sunplus SATAlink IDE/SATA adapter anymore now using the drive on the Promise HBA

SATA problems above fixed for me.

But the Tracking Servo still needs speeds above 16X and does always fail with Tracking Servo Errors on some Media (The above stated Verbatim e.g. but it likes the above stated cheap media).

There's no such SATA HBA, it's a
00:0f.0 IDE interface: VIA Technologies, Inc. VIA VT6420 SATA RAID Controller (rev 80)

Sorry for the error.

Don't buy a
00:08.0 RAID bus controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6421 IDE RAID Controller (rev 50)

The drive dislikes it more:

-Yes, but "controllers" are on the drives, HBA's are on the host.
