Read at max in DW1620 B7P9, but still too many PIE's. It seems the 16x zone in the P-CAV 16x writing contains average 100 or so PIE's.

So, after all this, would someone care to summarize the strengths/weaknesses of the GSA-4163B vs the BenQ DW1620. other than the obvious RW speed and DVD-RAM compatibility. thanks.

Hrm, well the BenQ overspeeds more media, should be faster at 12x and 8x since it uses P-CAV for those speeds, and it supports error scanning with Nero CD-DVD Speed. The LG is faster at 16x and (probably) has better -R burning quality.

LG 12x is much faster in GSA-4163B than GSA-4160/4120. The difference in 12x writing speed is no more very big between Z-CLV and P-CAV.

Still, the best thing about BenQ is its extremely bold and generous overspeed burning in the official firmware. And PIE/PIF/Jitter scanning plus Qscan. One might say low price (applied to US especially.)

Overall, I prefer LG because of its predictability and wide and easy availability.

Isn't the 12x P-CAV for the 4163B only for 16x media?

Right. But 12x Z-CLV in GSA-4163B is faster than 12x Z-CLV in GSA-4120B/4160B.

GSA-4120B@4160B A302 to YUDEN000T02 @12x (burned for this post freshly because I lost most previous records.)

8x: ~ 2100MB
12x ~ 4700MB

GSA-4163B

6x: ~ 200MB
8x: ~1600MB
12x: ~ 4700MB

Just approximation but it should be apparent GSA-4163B's Zone CLV is faster (or more aggressive) than GSA-4120B/GSA-4160B's Zone CLV. GSA-4160B uses Zone CLV for 16x writing and it is also faster than Pioneer DVR-108 with the latest firmware in the same Zone CLV writing.

Hi - I own the LG4163B for 4 days and I have a little problem with it.

I wanted to burn data on a Verbatim 4x DVD+RW Disc (MKM A02). Nero let me choose 4x or 2,4x to burn with the LG. I choose 4x then it wants to format the disc - at this time everthig seems to be ok - but as it started to burn i got an error.

I test two other mediums of the same type - and i got an error when it wants to format.

Then I start to burn at 2,4x speed - and everything works fine.

Then I look at the website from LG - and read that Verbatim is not listed at the supported DVD+RW Mediums.

Then I read the tests here and the review on hardwarezone.com
and at hardwarezone - the LG burn the Verbatim DVD+RW at 4x speed.

What can be wrong?

Thanks Exit

Sorry for my bad english - I'm from germany and my english isn't the best

I test one of the mediums with a NEC3500A - and there is no problem with 4x speed. It seems that the LG has some problems with these medium - but it can also be - that my pc has some problems.

I think i will test the LG in a other PC and post the results here.

To me, that sounds like very common RW-specific problems. Try various methods like trying new unused media, full formatting, etc.

Hm. Why Nero Burning Rom can't have average write speed and other information shown to the naked eyes?

Based purely on a PDF downloaded from LG Sweden site, the retail version of the product includes Nero Express 6, InCD 4 with DVD-RAM support, Power Producer Gold2 and Power DVD. Obviously, you will get the drive in a proper box with the usual data cable and screws. No mention of media however, be it DVD±R/RW or DVD-RAM.

Hope this helps.

Post a question just once in one place to prevent multiple same answers and to make the same things placed in one place. Posting a question more than once is against the forum rule here (which usually results in deleting and closing.)

There's no media bundled in the box as far as I know.

I've taken the plunge and ordered the drive via a shop on eBay, so hopefully I will receive the drive Monday or Tuesday.

The bundle I ordered comes in a external FireWire/USB 2.0 enclosure, so it will be interesting to see how it compares to connecting the drive internally and the LG GSA-5163.

If anyone's interested I'll post pictures when I get the drive through the post and perhaps perform some test burns once I've read up a bit more about it.
