best CD burner to burn at 1x and 2x speed?

Hi,

I am trying to figure out the best CD burner for burning at REALLY slow speeds like 1x and 2x.

I am trying to figure out the best way to back-up TurboGrafx-16/Pc-Engine CD's and I have been told that I should use a good CD burner on high quality media. I am trying to get an external unit that has a driver that can be run on XP.

Any suggestions?

HQ media is okay, would mean Verbatim & TY, but the bunspeed needs usually not limited to 1x or 2x, 8x is already slow enough with HQ media.

such drives don't exist. At least not available for consumers. Most recent DVD writers start with 8x or even 12x for CD-R. Pioneer DVR 112 starts with 4x, also some older LG drives (don't know about the newer ones).

So there is indeed no need for 1x-2x write speed. Modern media is optimized for higher speeds, so 16x-32x (depending on the drive) is the "sweet spot".

Windows XP can handle external CD/DVD writers without additional drivers. This is also true for Windows ME and 2000

Since I like the CD writing capabilities of my Samsung SH-S203B, I'd recommend the SE-S204N, which is the external version (plus Lightscribe).

Since this person is looking for a CD burner and not a DVD burner i would say if you can find a Plextor Premium 1 or Plextor Premium 2 that would be the only drives off hand i know of at this time.

But they are only available as used or refurbished drives, if I remember correctly.

Re: best CD burner to burn at 1x and 2x speed?

Hmmm. A lot of people suggest 1x or 2x for the PC-Engine, but then if the media doesn't support that slow.... It's kinda confusing.

I was actually thinking of getting an *really* old cd writer rather than something new.

I've been looking at HP CD-Writer 8200 Series 4x/4x/6x
Model C4489A for $20.00 on Ebay.

I think it does 2x at least, but its hard to be sure, and I think there's an XP driver for it...

CD/DVD drives generally don't require any special drivers. There's a generic driver already in place, and works for everything [unless you want to use certain DVD-RAM functions with your DVD-RAM writer].

modern writers don't support that slow speeds, and

ancient CD writers will have problems with modern discs.

Some old, possibly worn drive.
I don't see any need for burning with extremely low speeds. The backup copy will not work better.
As stated in your initial post: stick with decent quality media and a good writer.

I can use my nearly 11 years old Philips CDD 2600 SCSI CD-burner.
