Writer User Reviews and Comments Discuss, Anyone heard of notebook DVDburner Phillips SDVD8820? at CD, DVD and Blu-ray Writers forum; I have had a Dell Latitude D620 for 6 months now, with the philips 8820 drive. I've burned over 30 DVDs without a single glitch. I've always used the Sony 8x DVD+Rs and TDK 16x DVD+Rs.

Re: Anyone heard of notebook DVDburner Phillips SDVD8820?

New to the forum, but I have a question. I have this drive in my Gateway notebook, and it worked fine for about 2 months, now i hear grinding, and lots of noise, 2-3 minutes before autoplay works, and it will not write to cds.,any help out there? Also, there was a post about removing Secondary Ide, would this help my problem, or is my drive just a pos???

How would I go about getting a new drive if I have a non-working Philips dvd 8820 drive?

Re: Anyone heard of notebook DVDburner Phillips SDVD8820?

I suppose this is the case of a law suit against Dell for selling a device with a known problem.
I have gotten my E1505 about 7 months ago and with one week it started malfunctioning. And as someone stated, it takes forever (indeed like 3 hours + or -) to copy a DVD. Since then i had been using my external Benq 1655, but now i suppose i will wait for my classes to be over for this semester, then contact Dell about this.

How do i go about disabling my secondary IDE, and how did it improve for you???

Re: Anyone heard of notebook DVDburner Phillips SDVD8820?

The Philips 8820 is on my daughter's laptop and it has not stopped reading ANY disc. It's out of waranty so I'll have to replace it myself. Can anyone tell me specifically what drives are compatable. I don't want to go back with the Philips. I'd sure appreciate knowing what you have been able to use in it's place.

Thanks for you help.

Try your luck with Dell, since it is a 'known' problem. I have had Dell exchange things for me for free even after the warranty expired.
Try contacting them through email, it much less of a hassle since you don't have to be long waiting on the phone, and i have had much better outcomes from emailing contact.
Good luck and keep us updated!! I bought the two years warranty (which is due in October/08), and i guess i will ask for another one, let's see!!
