I've been quite happily using my Samsung S203B for the last eighteen months with no problems and almost no coasters. Then a few weeks ago I started getting the dreaded 'Illegal Disk' error in Nero. I was using Taiyo Yuden TYG03 from a stack of 100 DVDRs that I had already successfuly burnt 75 of. I can now only burn about one in five successfully. I recently bought a new stack of TYG03s and still get errors. I've also tried Imgburn and CDBurnerXP which give errors. I never seem to get past writing the Lead-in.

I've checked that my IDE channel is at UltraDMA Mode 5 and I've upgraded to the latest firmware on the drive, SB04.

Here is my Nero log:

This is driving me mad and I'm pulling my hair out. I've never had problems with TYG03 disks before. I've searched and think I've tried all suggested solutions to this problem. I'm still producing lots of coasters and at this rate it will be cheaper to buy a new drive.

However, I don't want to buy a new drive and face the same error. Is my drive defective or could it be my Vista set up?

Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

Thank you,

Teresa

I have never seen ultra dma5 on anything but a hard drive. You sure your burner is not on another channel and in pio mode?

My 203B shows as UDMA5 within the Silicon Image Controllers Utility.
So, UDMA 5 is not uncommon for Sata ODD.

My Samsung S203B is connected via a JMicron JMB361 controller on my motherboard (MSI P965 Platinum) and I've just updated to the latest driver for that. I still get illegal disk. I even tried later drivers from the JMicron website.

There is no DMA reported for this drive in my PC, at least I can't find it in System Devices.

I think that the next thing I am going to have to do is to try the drive in another PC. I need to find out whether it's the drive or my PC. If it doesn't work in another PC then it could be the drive or the media.

This is going to take me ages to sort out.

why do you gamble and connect your drive to the Jmicron instead of the Intel chipset integrated controller?

I did have it originally connected to the Intel controller, but as I have my hard drives in a RAID array I was having problems with my Samsung optical drive. I can't remember the problems that I had but they went away when I used the JMicron controller. I've been using my Samsung fine for eighteen months this way and it's only recently that I've been having the problems. I'd prefer not to use the JMicron but it seems that I'm stuck with it.

I've just tried my S203 in my son's PC and the first burn was successful though it took about 50 minutes. It had installed in PIO mode. I managed to get it into Ultra DMA Mode 5 and burns were quicker but seemed to get slower and verifying took ages. The fourth burn failed at 26% of the way through. All previous burns that had failed were at Lead-in stage.

I've connected back to my PC but this time using the Intel Sata port not the JMicron one. The first burn failed at the Lead-In stage again. I'm starting to think that I have a faulty drive here.

I think I'll buy a new drive. They are pretty cheap now and my S203 has already cost me several pounds in bad burns. However, which drive to get? Do I go for another Samusung or should I go for something else? I need a drive that can burn high quality disks as I'm backing up all my precious digital photos.
