What AZImmortal said seems to be very true for at least my Samsung slim drive--it managed to read discs that my desktop LiteOn and LG drives couldn't read. Your drive is probably the same way; it can read past the bad writing quality with ease.

Ok thanks for the explanation guys. I really appreciate it.

So is there a difference between media rated specifically for 2.4x and higher speed media too? Right now my Verbatim media is 8x, should I get 2.4x media specifically for 2.4x burning (I think my drive supports 3x and 4x burning though only per ImgBurn).

Oh and I checked the old discs burned in ImgBurn based on the info that Albert posted about "Last Recorded" and it looks like I am getting booktype recorded correctly per ImgBurn).

    Thank you
    Misha

I am not totally certain...if you can find the 2.4x media, it might help, because it had been originally made for slower burning. The 8x media probably can't be handled as well as possible, compared to desktop drives.

You MIGHT get better results with 2.4x Verbatim DL, but I can't say for sure.

Well so I'm stumped I burned at 2.4x speed my verbatim (8x) DVD+R DL disk with DVD-ROM booktype, even did sector/file scan with VSO Inspector 100% Good. Same result on my standalone Sylvania player. Do you think its cheaper to buy a good standalone DVD player for my TV rather than an external drive? Any recommendations for either?

    Thanks
    Misha

Well, you have to determine that for yourself. I, personally, have found that both a switch in the playback device and the burning device have had about equal success. Now, if you can find a good player that is advertised as being able to read written discs, then go for it! Your problems could very well be solved.

Whether it would be cheaper, it's hard to say. An external drive might be cheaper in the dollars and cents, and allow you to write your discs faster [thus being cheaper time-wise]. But there's still no guarantee it will work better that way.

Since it would probably be easier to return a DVD player in-store than get a new, good, cheap DVD burner and return it [if it didn't fix the problem], I would get a new DVD player. If it fixes your problem, and you have the money in the future, I would still highly suggest you get an external DVD writer to save the lifespan of your internal drive and probably increase write quality and compatibility.

all information needed is given in the FAQ (see my signature)

Note, you'll void your warranty if you crossflash.

Do I have to have administrative access to update firmware? All I get when I run TSDNWIN is multiple TSDNWIN.exe processes running. Do I have to downgrade my fw from d500?

Finally got my ts-L632H crossed flashed. I had to extract the bin and Tsdnwin separately from the aio utility in order for the flash to work. Thanks for all the info.

This is odd. Never had such an issue.

    No.

    Yes, this step is essential.
In case there is trouble with TSDNWIN, the SFDNWIN which comes with the Dell OEM firmware does the trick also.

I'm using a l632h (oem for HP), trying to cross-flash to samsung version, but can't see in their website a firmware for this :S

Seems so. I guess you have already checked samsungodd website.

Quite normal. Firmware support for slim drives is generally poor.
You may have a look at the SCxx firmwares for that drive from Samsungodd Korea (links see FAQ).

Apart from that, the newest firmwares for this drive are from Dell.

    Hi,

    yes, you can
Seriously, I haven't tried Kprobe, but I was successful with Nerö CD/DVD Speed, see Post #64. As for your scanning reliablity question: it's better to have additional scans taken with another drive in order to judge about the scanning capabilities of your individual unit.
