My Sony DRU-840A refuses to burn any media, I have, well at 16x. So I flashed it to the latest SH-S202N firmware and what do you know, a huge improvement.

FYI, the scan result from the SS01 firmware and this media was repeatable. Below is just the first scan using the SB02 firmware.

Here's the quality scan from both the SS01 and SB02 firmware with the EOPC 2 patch, using the same Verbatim MCC004 media:
