It's okay. A disc burned at 12x in my BenQ shows the same general PIE pattern of rising/falling. [A BenQ scan shows similar results, so didn't post...]

Imation 16x DVD-R
OPTODISCR016 made in Taiwan
Written at 16x [max] using CD-DVD Speed

When BenQ-scanned, the disc didn't have the best jitter in the world, but is still very usable. Recording the first part of the disc needs a little bit of work. PIE/PIF increase at the end may have been caused by a little contamination.

HP 2.4x DVD+R DL

First layer was darling; 2nd layer, not so much. Still plays flawlessly in my laptop drive. For 43 minutes...eh, it was sort of worth it. I'm itching to try the MKM 001 or MKM 003 strategy.

Nice jitter. PIE increase is due to poor visible physical quality of disc.

Nice compared to what I sometimes see around the forum. Still, it's only a 4010 MB burn [left there for time's sake].

Same media as above post; 16x write.

For an increase in speed and a full disc [as compared to the slower speed and smaller burn before]: Avg & max jitter went down; max, avg, and total PIE went down; total PIF isn't that much more, with the same average and same max. Go, Ritek!

[I want to say that it is the DRU-840A that makes that PIE mountain around 1.5 GB, but I can't remember what the scan of RITEKF1 in my Litey looked like. It does look like a recalibration or something caused it.]

Just to sum it up: this particular drive seems to be showing its burning prowess with cheaper media at the rated speeds. And overspeeding gives decent results, to boot. I'm proud.

I fully recommend YUDEN000 T02, MCC 03RG20, MCC 003, MKM 003, RICOHJPN R03, & RICOHJPN R01 for this drive. YMMV, though. All media I've done with this drive have had at the least acceptable quality for day-to-day use. RICOHJPN R03, MCC 003, and all DVD-R burned with my drive have been able to play in my picky Xbox drive. Neither DL has, but that has been true for the ~15 DL discs I have burned thus far.

Memorex 16x DVD+R
MCC 004 Made in Taiwan
Written at 20x using CD-DVD Speed

I guess even as Memorex media MCC 004 can do faily nice. Granted, PIE is high, but that's not just locked to this drive...hopefully, I'll be able to do a strategy swap in the future.

Jitter is acceptable, especially for a 20x burn.

Philips 16x DVD+R
CMC MAG M01 Made in Taiwan
Written at 18x using CD-DVD speed.

I don't know why the drive dropped the speed as early as it did, as nice as it looked, but that 16x area looks horrid. These discs have mechanical issues at the tail end, so I don't place everything on the drive.

Jitter is lovely, considering the PIE/PIF and the speed!

Just got the drive today. From what I have gathered, it is a Samsung 202j. This is scans of the stock firmware. Not going to try the samung firmware until a firmware for DRU comes out.

Someone tried the crossflash, and that's what we got out of it. So even though the 202J made sense, that's the FWs we should use.

That looks nice. Pulsee and I are still stuck on SS00 because Sony hasn't released SS01, and there's no way to extract firmware from Samsung drives.

I have a dozen different burners and by far the Sony DRU-840A with SS01 is the best all around burner I have. If it had permanent bitsetting like my Benq and Liteon drives it would be almost a perfect drive.

I don't have any Lightscribe discs to test it but InfoTool and DVDInfoPro both report Lightscribe as working now and the drive is working perfectly as a TSST SH-S202N SB01. First I had tried SH-S202J SB01 firmware which didn't work at all, the drive would not detect blank discs with this firmware. Then SH-S202H SB00 firmware which worked fine and offered the same features as the Sony SS00 firmware. After seeing the internal pics posted by wallace0134 I figured that the SH-S202N must be based on the same hardware as the SH-202H and that the MT1858L chipset is most likely Lightscribe capable, hence the "L". If anyone else out there cares to try and share their luck with actually using the enabled Lightscribe feature I for one would like to hear about it.
What utility should I use to save original SS01 DRU-840A firmware and crossflash it to the SH-S202N SB01? I didn't find flash utility for subj here: http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/dru840adwn.htm .

There is no tool known that would safely retrieve the firmware from a Samsung based drive.
The crossflashing in general is described in the FAQ.

Hi Michael,
possible that sfdnwin.exe has some other command paprameters, besides -NOCHECK?

That is bad if there is no way to dump native firmware.

Thanks to Kanalratte's earlier work, I think I can extract the DRU-840A SS01 firmware, and then hopefully I can also release a Fast Read and Fast Burn firmware.
