Well , I was wrong , I've read some reviews and the drive seems very good , in fact better than 820A (1670) .
Maybe I'll grap one when it shows up here .
I also realized that I was somewhat harsh in reacting to the topic and what I posted was already off topic .

Sorry again

I would guess that there is no way to crossflash the sony firmware onto a Samsung SH182D or M. Maybe someone will come up with a way.

Well it can be done but what is gained? Permanent +R bitsetting and UDMA-4 is all I see.

So where can I get instruction on how this is done? It seem as if "akserbenet "above had a little problem. Permanent bitsetting is enough, UDMA 4 is a plus also.

This burn almost got to 18X on USB. Looks like it maxed out at 17X before falling back to 12X. Burst rate in this enclosure is 23 MB/s. I have a few other cases I can try and one is also firewire but my DW-1640 is in that one. Might be able to hit 18X across firewire. Scan shows the burn getting ugly after 17X. Not sure if this was a result of USB hitting max.

There are no instructions on how to do this at the moment. The process is not straight forward and xsf is probably not the right tool. Getting back to the 182 firmware may be tricky. It is very possible to stuff up the drive using current methods.

Thanks worker, I appreciate the input, if there is ever a safe way to do this I would like to try it as killling a 30.00USD drive is not going to bother me, I have 2 of these already SH182D and SH182M so if someone comes up with a way, I would be up for giving it a try.

I agree killing the drive is no big deal but you seem to have a very good 182D. I would say the one I have is O.K. but nothing to get excited about. This one was made in June. The first one I had was made in September and it was horrible. Swapped it for the one I have now. When was yours made?

Well tried firewire. Got 26 MB/s burst but maxed out at 17.48X and fell back to 12X at the end.

I think it's worth paying almost double the price to get a Sony, because of the permanent bitsetting. Too bad Samsung doesn't include this in stock firmware. The UDMA 4 is a plus also. From what I can gather the Sony firmware is pretty much up to date and burns seem to be as good as the Samsung. I really do not want kill my existing SH-S182D trying to do a crossflash. CC has a $20 rebate and I have $15 off coupon so it will bring it down to about $55 AR.

Full pcb image. You can clearly see "SH-S182D/M" above the eeprom.

Yes, unfortunately the bitsetting is temporary.
Based upon what I read toward the end of this thread I thought the Sony had permanent bitsetting, but in the above quote it mentions temporary. Which is true?

I tried SS22 and SS23 - both do not support bitsetting. Is there a way to download SS20 and revert back to it? The original review on this site shows a screencap of Nero clearly supporting bitsetting with SS20 fw.

Yes I'm using Panasonic drivers with my DRU-830A and they work fine. I'm using the B.H.A Win2K package. That said there's a trick to make it work. The trick is here.

BTW how do you turn DVD-RAM write verification off? Zevia's review indicates that it can be done.
