sh-s222a with XP refuses DVD play in WinMediaPlayer??

sh-s222a, installed literallt 33 minutes ago. No erros or recognition issues.

Windows Media Player refuses to play a DVD music video that is a working DVD.

Tells me the Decoder Plug ins is either old or not possible without Windows 7 being purchased???????

Is there a work around that doesn't involve buying a new OS or other software?

Thanks.

Hi,

Windows XP (Media Player) does not support DVD playback out-of-the-box. You need to have separate DVD playback software installed.
In case your drive did not come with software, free options are:
Mediaplayer Classic Home Cinema
or
VLC Player.

OMG! Has it been that long? I was certain DVD playback was supported with Media Player but I've killed a few brain cells since then..

I've tried VLC, will try your OTHER choice also.

How can I force XP to use, for example, VLC every time DVD movie is inserted into the DVD Drive?

Like auto play, but without having choose the software, have it just run in VLC by default?

thanks so far..

It's not a matter of software capability, but a license question. MS didn't license MPEG2 decoders for XP, that's all. They changed their mind with Vista and Windows 7.

Check the options and settings of the software, if there is a "make default for DVD playback" checkbox or similar.
You might also check the "Programs Access and Standards" (no idea about the name in non-german Windows versions) applet from control panel.
