Samsung Writer Discuss, SH-S183, sata version... at CD and DVD Writers forum; Anyone try this one out? I just found it at best buy and bought it because it's sata. I've got the Plextor PX-755SA, but thought I'd give it a whirl. Anyone else pick it up? Well, I can at least report that XP recognizes it and it reads cd's and dvd's. I haven't burned anything with it yet, but the good news is I can load games (BF2142). More to follow...

If you can, please do some more testings please.

I'm sure this one combines the best of the 163 SATA and the 182 models.

I would like to pick up one of these, but I am unwilling to pay $87.99 to BestBuy.

I searched froogle and pricewatch, and could not find any for sale.

Excellent price, I must say. I used a 12% off coupon, a $10 reward certificate and bought it in New Hampshire (no sales tax), so I didn't pay full price at least.

Shawn1998,
I would be very interested in some Disc Quality Scans generated by this drive.
I currently have a LG-H22n (using a JMicron IDE to SATA converter), installed in my Dell 9200. My burst rates on my LG are 27/28MB/s. Your burst rates on your 183 are phenomenal!
I would like to see if your burns live up to your burst rates as I am considering this drive.
Thanks

I justgot me the SH-s183 and hooked it up on my VIA-controller, where I couldn't get any better speed than 4x, even if the device (with Nero7.5.1.1) said available speeds: 2,4x 4x 8x Btw while the drive was active, the computer was unusable (like an IDE-burner in PIO-mode)
The same in another PC with nforce S-ATA, where at least I managed it to set the booktype and made a firmware update (which didn't work on the first computer).
Then I switched back to the first computer and connected the drive to the SiliconImage controller, where it runs now at the selected speed (eg 8x).
But my BenQDW1620 still is faster on the same media where I reach up to 16x while the Samsung still reports 8x and verifying is a pain, as the 183 reaches no more than 8x reading speed
Hardware:
1.Computer: Abit KB8 Max-III with AMD64 3200+ 1GB Ram
2.Computer Asrock K7NF2 with AMD200+ 1GB Ram

The price at pagecomputers.com looks good, but their reseller ratings are bad enough to prevent my buying from them.

If tests by the manufacturer have showed that some media is unrelaible at faster speeds it is better to limit the burnspeed than allowing faster speeds that will create coasters, don't you think so!??!

Besides, HOW LONG is the Benq1620 out and how long is the 183 out...?

@_chef: You are completely right, but don't you agree, that a drive should use the burning speed suggested by itself? I select 8x and it uses 4x (max)
I don't use 16x too oftem, I usually prefer 8x, but when I select 8x, I wish to burn at 8x not 4x :-( All I said is that there is a problem with the Samsung and the VIA chipset (at least with my hardware setup). Enough of that, I finally solved the problems byconnecting the the device to the Silicon Image controller.

That surely is true.
So, the Controller was the problem?!

This is not surprising. When Plextor started shipping SATA DVD burners (approximately a year ago?), there were some very long threads in the Plextor forum about compatibility with various motherboards/SATA controllers. This may have something to do with why the various manufacturers of DVD burners have been so S-L--O---W to ship SATA models.

This is no surprise, as most SATA controllers are designed as RAID controllers, that don't support ODD properly.

Fellas... I just picked one up tonight from Best Buy.. on sale right now for $59.99. I'll run a test or 2 myself, but can you help me out as to what specific test you're looking for? I'm a little green with this stuff. I have Nero 7 with all the goodies. I just want to copy movies and have not had good luck with the last 2 Sonys. Fingers crossed.

If someone can give me some quick steps, I'll post data after a burn.

Peace,

Stretch

Any chance you could tell us if lightscribe works?
My one doesn't seem to want to show up as a lightscribe drive...
Cheers!

Lightscribe is burning on the SH183L as I am reporting this: Burning a custom image of the movie "Little Man" to it with "best settings" and it reports that it will take 29 minutes to burn the label.
