| Thank you all for the input to solving this awful problem for me with the SH-S182D. First I tried firmware 3 and 4, no luck ![]() Second firmware 1, no luck ![]() Thirdly I swapped the floppy and molex power supply out of the back of the dvd rom and put it on its own power supply, and hey presto DVD-R burned first time ![]() Hope this helps someone and good luck |

| What's the mediacode of the media you are using. Use Nero CD/DVD Speed to retrieve mediacode and post result. |

| CMC MAG. AM3 have caused a few problems in the past, though my Infiniti branded ones burn OK. The fact that it's Tuffdisc branded means it's probably B or C grade CMC, unfortunately. So I'd say it's probably media related rather than the burner. ![]() I had some Datawrite branded CMC discs (8x ones, CMC MAG. AE1) - out of 10 discs, 7 were coasters, no matter which burner I used. Welcome to the forum BTW, evesham

| Hi Arachne fellow Englishman, thanks for the info. Will dvd+r work in stand alone dvd drives in the uk or did I hear right they are all minus? About to give up with this drive and use the old one on my other pc, 100% reliable liteon. This one doesnt even detect the Emtek blanks, so until Samsung get there finger out, 16 coasters is enuff for my wall |
- #161
| Arachne's an Englishwoman, btw ![]() Standalone compatibility is a crapshoot. Most of the current standalones will accept DVD-R, non-bitsetted DVD+R, and bitsetted DVD+R well. If you have an older standalone, you may have more luck with DVD-R, or DVD+R bitset to DVD-ROM. Bitsetting is supported by Nero, ImgBurn, and other burning software on your drives.

| Hehe, Evilboy got there first ![]() My two older players (both Philips) play +Rs just fine, even without bitsetting them to -ROM. In fact, I tend to use mostly +R for everything LOL. Oh BTW, if you have a Staples near you - they're doing 25 spindles of -/+R Verbatims (16x), buy one get one free - my Samsung loves them, even at 18x!

| thanks evilboy. Sorry for that arachne, my bad ![]() Just looked online at the staples, good price for buy one get one free, but way too expensive £10.99 for 25 alone. I'm used to putting any old grade rubbish in the liteon ![]() Anyway these things are sent to try us!! |
- #164
| I think you should be fine with most stuff in the Sammy as long as it doesn't have Datawrite, Tuffdisc or Emtec written on it ![]() Maxell +Rs (RICOHJPN R03) from Asda are working great in mine, not at 18x though (not supported at that speed). Hehe, and don't worry about confusing me for a bloke, it seems to happen often on here

| Just my luck to get discs that don't work!! Think I'll get some +R's and bitsett them when burning to minus, before I start butting the wall ![]() Thanks for all your help and lets hope Samsung release the sb05 firmware soon to solve this. |

| Hi all, most of the problems with this DVD burner is resolved when a single length of power supply output from the PSU is dedicated solely for the DVD burner only. Do not use the other connectors on the length of power supply output from the PSU (dedicated for this DVD burner) on other devices. |
- #167
| It sounds strange to me. Dont you think all PSU cables have the common point (wire)/per voltage? |
- #168
| It is flakey because filtering capacitor value on +5V wire inside the drive is too small. As I wrote in my previous post, adding 3300 mkf right at the drive +5V pin (or near it through male to female adapter) makes DVD-R readable, removing it makes it unreadable again. It is 100% repeatable in my case. It could be some cases when there are other factors like specific IDE controllers or software problems. What is really strange that the problem is for DVD-R only, feels like software related, isn't it? Strange. |

When using this, do you still have only this drive on the power lead from your PSU or does this device allow you to put other devices on the same power lead? Great work! Thanks |

| I bought the Mad Dog version of this drive today, and I'm quite pleased with it. It came pre-loaded with the SB03 firmware, so the DVD-R I experimented with burned perfectly. Further, this driver is whisper-silent, even more quiet than the Plextor PX-716A it replaced which to some is a reference model. All-in-all, although I'm not a pro when it comes to determining PIE and PIF quality, it seems as if this driver is a winner. As a general comment to the problems people were having before, it seems a shame a major manufacturer would release a drive that needed a firmware revision to flawlessly burn all disks claimed on the box. But, I guess I lucked out in getting a drive that would do so without hassle. A final note: I use Nero 7.5.9.0A as my burning program. torataka |

| Hi, It's my first post here and I'd like to thank you all because I solved the problem with my SH-S182D!! I did the capacitor trick with a 2200uF/16V and it worked fine, I could read all DVD-R I burned and couldn't play in drive itself before! |

| Welcome rmr2k7 and glad it worked for you. Having tried every option, i.e firmware, single psu supply, DVD+, DVD-, the only option for me was to RMA in exchange for a flawless BenQ, Goodbye piece of cr*p |
