Samsung TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-S182M SB05 (ATA) DVD+R issues -_-

Ugh -_-,

Just joined here, looking for some answers to my highly torture problem...

Well, I have a Samung TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-S182M SB05 PC Burner/Drive.

I'm trying to burn some media to some TDK DVD+R disc(s).

When burning using ImgBurn, I set the booktype to DVD-ROM (of course right?)

When I select my drive, select my media, and then click DVD-ROM, and click "Change", it says "Success!", then I click ok.

Burning my media at x2.4.

When I first start the burn, it says "Writing LeadIn", and just stays at that.

I notice that the "Write Retries" keep going up and up. I click ImgBurn Log, and there's lots of yellow exclamation points next to this, "W 16:48:03 Retry Failed - Reason: Power Calibration Area Error"

My drive HAS to support DVD+R right? I mean, it can burn to DVD-R's perfectly with no problem.

ImgBurn does this automagically, so normally you don't need to care about that.

Please post the MID of these discs. Use DVD Identifier for that job.
Coarse rule of thumb: 16x rated media should be good for 8x-12x burn speeds.

Yes, of course your drive does support DVD+R - and with stock firmware even better than the DVD-R variety.
2.4x burn speed is supported for very old media. So it is not impossible, your blank discs are just bad (possibly degraded due to storage conditions).
Please try known good quality media like Verbatim (@8x or 12x) and see if your drive does better with these.

"power calibration error"? Ok. Try to clean the lens of the drive. Either use a can with compressed air, or open the drive and clean the lens carefully with a soft brush (with a "blower") as used for camera lens.

Meh...

I tried the air in the can, and that didn't work.

I used a lens cleaner, no luck either.

I don't think the lens is the problem since it can burn to DVD-R's fine.

There's gotta be a setting for this ;~;

Well,

I did use my laptop to burn to DVD+R's,

And it did work.

But my media is TOOO big to store on an SD card or flashdrive to port to the laptop.

Upgrade to firmware SB06 and see if that helps:

Hello, sorry for the late reply.

I do have the highest firmware via an AutoUpdate Manager, Samsung has released. I now have,

I also thought upgrading the firmware would solve it, but I guess not.

EDIT: Ah well, I'll just their customer service emailing or something and see if that helps.

using some piece of software like that isn't a good idea. Too much can go wrong, so the manual way is the better option.

At least not with known good media.
I still suspect there is some hardware problem, so I still recommend to try the drive with another computer.

Is there any warranty on the drive?

Keep us posted please

Hello.

Sorry again for the delay. I just keep forgetting to visit here.

But about the AutoUpdate software. Whenever I try and download it manually from their site, the included folder doesn't include a .bin firmware file to update with. That's why I used the AutoUpdate software, and it updated fine.

Sadly, this computer is kind of "old". So I doubt the warranty is still active. But how could I check?

I'd start with the invoice and other documents you received with the drive (or your computer).

Hey Mciahel, I appreciate your help with this.

The folder that I download from their website is this,

http://www.samsung.com/us/support/do...d&menu2=detail

Go to the bottom where it says SB06, and then that zip icon. Download it, and open it up. There's supposed to be a .bin file in there, along with the firmware installer. The installer is there, but not the .bin firmware file.

I'm typing this from my laptop as of now, next time I'll look at the invoice next time I'm on the desktop.
