Tested media:

+R:
OptodiscOR8: Writes at 8x but fails readback.
CMC.MAG.E01: Writes at 8x and the quality is good.
YUDEN000T02: Writes at 8x and the quaity is good.
Ritek.R03: Writes at 8x, but the quality is not very good.

-R:
OPTODISCR008: Writes at 8x, but the quality is not good.

That is all I've tested so far.

Did you do scan disk? I got same drive, and I tried to burn with verbatim 16X media with 4x, However, I saw a lot of red dots. How can I fix...

Don't use 16x media with this drive.

Only use 8x media that is supported to get acceptable results.

Writing unsupported media at 4x like you did usually gives unreadable discs.

i updated my TI51 to TI94 (date 09/09/05) and it solved my biggest problem - with TI51 the drive wasn't really working with my samsung pleomax dvd-r discs. it took me 14minutes to burn then at 8x speed and >90% were not readable. with the TI94 firmware it takes me 10min 30sek and i have no more problems reading the dvds in my nec3520a or my xbox.

@bamserl - yep it does look a lot better. Can you do some quality scans on some other drive? Your burn is a bit small also ~3.5GB, more problems may appear at the end of the disk. And I´d be most grateful if you could send me this TI94 fw by email cause I can´t download it myself.

good. i recorded some disc with 4.2g or more.

at 8x speed all of them have some 1 or 2 red dots in my nec 3520a, but every dot is behind 4.0g. if i burn the same files, iso, vobs or what ever with 4x speed, i don't have this problem. it just takes a little bit longer. 11mins @ 8x, 18mins @ 4x for a 4.36g disc

viewing the movies burned at 8x speed in my xbox is no problem, but copying them back on my HDD is not possible.

which media do you use? i only have samsung pleomax 8x dvd-r

hi,

with TI51 I´ve had following results:

- MCC04 @8x coasters only
- MCC04 @4x quite good but not excellent as one could expect with this grade media
- Ritek R03 V2 noname silver @4x not very good but readable also on my standalone player
- Ritek R03 V2 Platinum @4x coasters only
- Verbatim 2,4x DL not good but readable
- Ricoh 2,4x DL not very good but better than Verbatim DL

with TI94:

- Ritek R03 V2 noname silver @4x coasters only
- Ritek R03 V2 Platinum @4x good

with both TI51 and TI94 R03 can be burned @4x max

this is interesting that firmware upgrade turned Ritek results vice-versa. My 3540 also writes on Platinum with better result compared to noname silver. On NEC I use with R03 4x because results are a lot better than with 8x.

right now I unfortunately don´t have any other media but Ritek R03

today i tried out a verbatim 8x dvd-r (TYG02) @8x with 4.25g

i checked it in the 532a, lg4165b and a pioneer 109, all 3 showed no errors.

i'll try to get some more of these discs. i got that 1 from a friend for testing.

I'm having internet trouble at home so I can't post scans right now.

All I could say is that TI94 is not worse at least.

The media compatibility is better - speedwise at least.

ProdiscF01 --> now 8x, was 4x
TTG02 --> now 8x, was 4x.

But writing quality with much media is still sucky.

ProdiscF01 --> unreadable
CMC.MAG.E01 --> works
TTG02 --> works in good readers, fails in bad.
OPTODISC.OR8 --> works

Some scans, notice that one is made with a Lite-On drive while the rest is made by a BenQ drive.

TTG02 = crap
ProdiscF01 = crap
CMC.MAG.E01 = works

I have flashed to the ti94 firmware, I was using the toshiba tu51 fw before. Look at this amazing result with CMC MAG E01 Platinum at 8X.

I upgraded from tu51 (toshiba fw). Here a scan from a ritek g05 pity it is only at 4X supported. Do NOT use MCC 01rg20, it produces unreadable discs. Ritek G05 is fine though.

My one even worse, bought a asus laptop off ebay like new but no warranty on it.
One morning, I just found out the drive dont want to read any DVDs I have although it's good with CDs.
Try to upgrade as many firmware I can find. The orginal is TI51, up to TU 51, then TI94 with no good.
My gusses is this drive have hardware issues, like the laser is not strong and stable enough to work with DVD.
