| Re: Samsung SH-S223B/SH-S223C testing and observations Doesn't look bad at all. You're right to run a transfer rate test any time you're worried about the quality of your burn. Sometimes a read-back test is a better indicator of a decent or bad burn than a quality scan. Use your quality scan to help find the best burn speed for each batch of discs.

Like deanwitty said, sometimes you'll get a better idea of what's readable with a tranfer test, as quality scan reliability can vary between scanners. Your MCC002 burns are OK - that spike you get in the middle spoils it, but they should still be fully readable in most devices.

| Re: Samsung SH-S223B/SH-S223C testing and observations How do you run quality tests? CD-Speed and Opti Drive Control say the drive doesn't support that test. |

| Re: Samsung SH-S223B/SH-S223C testing and observations Thanks for the reply. I tried the registry tweaks by still no luck. It starts and tries but ends up with an error stating that the drive doesn't support the test. |

| Re: Samsung SH-S223B/SH-S223C testing and observations Burns with my SH-S223C seem to score not worse than burns with my SH-223B which are not bad. What do you think about the following result? |

| Re: Samsung SH-S223B/SH-S223C testing and observations Well I plugged in an old lite-on DVD-RW I had laying around somewhere and ran a scan. I got very similar results to kyrcy's, except for the spikes at the end. It wasn't too bad at all but it's the first burn from the drive and the first media from the MCC-004 (made in United Arab Emirates) spindle. More scans will follow. Thanks. |

| Re: Samsung SH-S223B/SH-S223C testing and observations I think these results are not bad considering, even at a writing speed of 16x or less. |

| My own 223B can happily do well up to x16. Sometimes it gives coasters at x18, and the coasters multiply when you burn all the way up to MAX (x22). And it was not the only unit to display such inability to accurately burn to the end at full advertised speed with some of the best media in the market. I can only put it down to possible sloppy quality control at the factory which may have resulted in certain batches of these drives reaching the shop shelves, when they should have never left the factory. But this is only my estimation on how it may have happened. If this is the case, then it's something that you can't just fix with firmware updates. You're looking at partial batch recalls and RMAs. Also remember that most novice users - who know next to nothing about optical disc burning - will most likely burn at MAX and expect their files to be at least readable. Almost all the 223B and 223C units that me my colleagues tested produced an extremely high percentage of coasters at full speed, and with best quality media. Whatever it was, they seem to have fixed it with the new generation of x24 drives, these can burn at maximum with very good results.

| Re: Samsung SH-S223B/SH-S223C testing and observations 1st burn with SH-S223C SB02. Verbatim 8x +R ( MCC003 ) burned at 12x. A bit slow 12x = 7:03 The quality is good.
