Greetings,
This is my first time posting to this forum.

I have put together my first computer and the following are the specs:

OS: Vista Ultimate 32bit SP1
Video: VGA BFG BFGE86256GTOC2FE 8600GT 256
Network Card: WL ADPT NETGEAR|WG311T 108M RTL
Power supply: PSU TT|W0100RU 500W RT
Mother board: MB ABIT AN-M2HD GF7050 AM2 RETAIL
Hard Drive: HD 500G|WD 7K 16M SATA2 WD5000AAKS
Processor: CPU AMD|A64 X2 6400+ 3.2G AM2 2M R
DVD-RW drive: Samsung 20x dvd-rw SATA Model #SH-S203N
Memory: CORSAIR XMS2 4GB PC2-6400 DDR2-800
Monitor: Samsung 206BW 20in Widescreen LCD Monitor
Casing: THERMALTAKE Wing RS 101 VG8000BNS Mid Tower Case

The reason for my posting is that my dvd-rw drive seems to not be working properly with DVD formats. Whether it be a game or Movie (store bought), the dvd will run and then go idle during the movie or installation of a program from a dvd. This causes the comp to freeze and be idle as well for up to 20 minutes...not to mention that vista took over 5 hours to install!

Has anyone experienced these problems? If so, please let me know what you did to fix it.

Also, I have tried flashing the BIOS with an external floppy drive, but that did not change anything.

Thank you for your help.

Mark

Hi and Welcome!

the first thing, I would think of, would be the operation mode of the Sata controller. If possible, set it to IDE compatible mode and see if that works.
Also, either try latest Nvidia chipset drivers or Windows integrated IDE drivers (uninstall Nvidia Sata/IDE drivers using the Nvidia installer in "Control Panel --> Add/Remove Software")

Would your suggestion work even though the DVD-RW has no IDE connection?

Hi
Welcome onboard markrogers1220.
The SATA bios settings are either non-raid (IDE compatable) or raid.
So it is possible that mciahel's suggestion would have some affect.
