Samsung SH-S202G/BEBN "tray open" problem

Just got my first burner, a Samsung SH-S202G/BEBN in an Eaglebit USB case and I can't make a single burn.

Using Toast8 in OSX Tiger, I get a Tray Open message even with the tray shut, and the disc inside. Clicking close tray doesn't help. It doesn't seem to matter if the tray is open or closed. The drive is recognized by Toast, but the status is always "tray open", which means I can't record and eventually have to hit cancel. I'm also getting "please insert a recordable disc" message even with a disc inside. The other weird thing is, while typing this post, I can hear the burner making noise, with the light blinking, but Toast isn't indicating there is a burn going on.

I'm experiencing this problem using Verbatim CDR's or HP DVD+R's, and I'm just trying to copy a small amount of data for a test run.

So.... did I get a bad drive? Is it the stupid USB case?
I'm under a big deadline, and need to get this sorted out, or buy a working drive quickly! Thanks for the help.

Hi and Welcome!

could you try the unit on a Windows machine? If it fails there, too, then return that thing back to the vendor.

Nope, I live in a very sheltered Mac world I guess...

BUT... the interesting thing is I tried this on an old desktop and the finder, and older version of Toast recognized the drive. So it's not a lemon. The question is why my new ish Ibook and Toast8 only recognize my internal CDRW drive.

Could you manage to burn a DVD there?

Hmm. Your observation might indicate a problem with your mac. Chances are not very high that someone here has an idea
Maybe you should ask in a mac forum additionally...
