Hi there!

I have just built a computer with two of the Samsung SH-S182M drives and it seems BIOS sees them just fine (Installed and booted off Windows disc to install just fine). And it even worked in Windows for a brief minute, however now they just sat TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-S182M (Two of them) each with a yellow exclamation point in my device manager.

I have tried to download the latest firmware, but how the heck do I install firmware on a CD/DVD drive that Windows can't communicate with?

I've tried looking for just regular drivers but they are more impossible to find than a pot of gold. All there is out there is firmware updates (It seems).

Is there somewhere I can go to download this driver and manually install it through Windows (XP) ? I am running SP2 also.

This is driving me absolutely nuts! As I just built this computer and can not install other drivers I need also because they are all on CD/DVD! Ahhhhhh!

I tried looking th the disc that came with the drive but all that is on there is a DOS Driver that isn't a .bat or .inf file and won't install in Windows anyway.

Also, since I have so many drives, my Local disk with OS on it is the G: drive and I've already run into problems with this with installers saying please insert disk and "not enough space on disk"

I tried to change this in Windows also but it keeps saying that I can't change the drive letter of my root drive with OS on it.

Anyway, has anyone had this similar problem with this internal Samsung drive? I need a resolution ASAP and drivers would be nice too so I can update the firmware and install my other drivers also.

I am just getting really frustrated with this so sorry.

Thanks in advance for your replies!

Mikw.

Welcome to CD Freaks.

When you installed the burners how did you set the jumpers & on what IDE cables connections are they?

Check the jumper settings first & then in Device Manager uninstall the IDE controller that these are on & reboot.

Is this a master/slave issue or a dodgy cable? Check the master/slave jumpers on the back of the drive and use an 80 conductor IDE cable.

It would be very risky to update the firmware when the drives are not working properly.

Thanks for the prompt replies guys!

Sorry I forgot to include the setup info in my original post.

The drives are setup on one 40pin IDE cable top connection on top drive, secondary connection on bottom drive; top drive is set as MA (Master) and bottom drive is set as SL (Slave/Secondary).

Everything seems kosher there (At least to me). And the cable I am using came brand new and sealed with my mobo, so it should be good; plus like I said above, it WAS working at one point and they are seen by Windows.

I am at work now though, so I won't be able to try anything right away, but I will definitely try and uninstall the IDE controller, never thought of that so thanks much

Also is there any way to install any drivers or anything from bios or how can I access the drive before I get into Windows and install whatever is on the disk that came with them? I didn't think there was, but thought it may help just in case.

Any more ideas, anyone? Or anyone have or seen/heard of a similar problem?

Any help is MUCH appreciated!

Thank you all!

Mike.

No drivers are needed for normal IDE burners.

All burners these days work best with 80wire IDE cables so best to check you've got those.

Try just disconnecting the slave burner & see what happens as it's not unknown for 2 drives to clash or for an IDE cable to give problems.

With loads of drives there's still no reason why the OS disk shouldn't be C: . I've got 3 HDDs and 4 burners and my HDDs are C,D & E as they should be. I think you might need to reinstall XP soon.

Thanks for the reply.

Just what I dreaded! Are you sure I will have to reinstall Windows in order to change the drive letter of my HD with Windows on it? Or is there some way to do it in BIOS or elsewhere?

Also if I do need to reinstall Windows, how can I make sure that it does in fact assign the letter C: to my root Windows directory and not another letter like last time?

And any thoughts on the DVD Drives problem as far as what I should try and do for Windows to see them? I know you said something about an 80 wire cable, but how would that connect to the drive if it only has enough pins for a 40 pin IDE cable?

Kinda lost sorry!

Thanks in advance!

An 80wire cable still has only 40pins, it's just that each pin now has an earth connector as well so 80wires -> 40 pins.

The problem with switching to the C Drive is that all the registry entries refer to the G drive. The might be some MS software that helps but I don't about it.

As far as installing it on the C Drive all I can say is that I've never had any issues with my setups. Hopefully someone else might be able to explain more.

How are your HDDs configured?

I just have one internal HD. Western Digital SATA 16mb cache, 250GB partioned into two drives, 85,000MB for the partition with Windows and 150,000MB for storage and what not.

Then I also have an external Western Digital USB HD that is just one 250GB drive for storage also.

So not much configuring there. The internal drive doesn't have jumpers obviously, but nothing to worry there as it's a single drive with two partitions and only one install of Windows.

Thanks for the reply!

Now my computer is not letting me boot off of either CD drive when I reboot!

I was trying to reinstall XP!

Now what do I do?!

I tried to remove all the IDE controllers and when they reinstalled, it was the same old DVD Drives with the yellow exclamations.

I am at a loss here and need some serious help!

I can't even boot off of the XP disc to reinstall it now!

Make sure in bios that one of them is the 1st boot device and put the boot disc in the correct one.
Make sure all your cables are plugged in.

And take your time, take a deep breath, etc...

Have you tried setting the jumpers to cable select on both of the burners? That's what I actually had to do with both of my Optical Drivers.

If you are getting problems after using your motherboard install cd, you may have a problem with the inf on that disk. IE, the problem may be a software issue with your controllers, not the drive. Try downloading the latest chipset inf from your mobo manufacturer.

I went to the Gigabyte website and downloaded the latest chipset update (3/15/2007) from them and installed it but still nothing. I think i know how to delete the ide channels (through device manager) but i dont know how to find out which is my dvd drive. In device manager my DVD drive doesnt even show up nor does a cd rom drive.

Reboot the system, and when it is coming up, hit the f2, del, f10, and f1 keys. It will be one of those, I'm not really sure which key it is on a Gigabyte board. It will take you into the BIOS, and it should tell you what version you are running. Then you can go to the Gigabyte site and download the latest one. Be sure to follow their instructions to the letter. If the update screws up, you will have to send your board back to them to fix it.

I just had the same problem. In my case it was the DivX software bundle I dloaded and installed. If you have that, uninstall it and reboot. I will never use their software again.
Other than that I don't have a clue.

Anyway, I have problems with Samsung SH-S182M.

Does not always work using "80wires" cables !

On "Asus A8N Deluxe SLI" with this drive installed XP can't boot !

On "Asus P5N E SLI" and Intel Core 2 Duo 6600" ( and fresh XP install + Nero 7.8.5.0 ) the system work but not Nero 7!! It stop since the first application lauch on "detecting devices"
( on Lightscribe driver, because if I stop it Nero can start fine !! )

I have 4 DVD-RW ( Benq 1640, Pioneer 112D, Optiarc 5170 and the 182M !! )

The 182M has been updated using the latest FW

Obviously I have tried to swap or remove all the 4 DVD-RW

Maybe that 182M have some problem on the ATAPI interface

:-D Maybe but I don't think that this is the problem

If I put one Pioneer 111L ( or one Lg H12N or Benq 1620... ) in place of the Samsung 182M all works fine.

This is my second attempt to buy some Samsung DVD-RW.
The previous one was 162L ( retail package ).. in this case the problem was the tray

ohhhh I have absolutely nothing vs Samsung :-)
My brand new monitor is one Samsung SyncMaster 206BW ( and one of the my new HD is a Samsung 300 GB SATA )

I've had recent problems with my Samsung SH-S182M as well. Its a new burner that I just purchased from NewEgg.com because the previous DVD burner(BenQ Burner DW1655) I had went bad as well This is my current setup:
ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce SPP 100 ATX AMD Motherboard
Maxtor MaXLine III 7V250F0 250GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM
Antec LifeStyle SONATA II Piano Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 450Watt SmartPower 2.0 Power Supply
Dual SLI XFX PV-T71G-UCE7 GeForce 7900GT 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Cards
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Manchester 2.0GHz Socket 939 Processor Model ADA3800BVBOX
SILVERSTONE SST-ST60F ATX 600W Power Supply
CORSAIR XMS 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 433 (PC 3500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model TWINX2048-3500LL
ZALMAN CNPS9500 LED 92mm 2 Ball Cooling Fan with Heatsink
I am using Nero v7.5.9.0 & Roxio Easy Media Creator 9, which were both working fine when I first installed the burner, but the burner went out. I am wondering if maybe there is something that I am doing incorrectly or maybe some setting that I can apply so that I know they are setup correctly? Any suggestions on any software/configurations or a specific burner that might work the best with my motherboard or power supply or basically that setup that I am currently using would be greatly appreciated. I am in the process of uninstalling and then trying to re-install Nero, and I've had some problems with my pc restarting and heard that Roxio could be the culprit so I am just going to try Nero. I was also thinking of re-installing windows, but wanted to try anything I could to salvage my pc before having to do so. I was recieving an error "Power calibration error" and I tried a suggestion I found on one website which were to go to control panel > admin. tools > services > and disable the IMAP service, but that did not work. I just found a suggestion from Nero which is to try different power connectors, and different configurations, as I have also already updated the firmware to the latest version 4. I also have a yellow exclamation point for Mass Storage Controller under my device manager other devices, which I thought was my IPod but its there when I don't even have my IPod plugged in. And I also use Alcohol %120, Power Iso, and Magic Iso, Win Iso, which have created a few virtual drives on my computer if that may have an affect on the problem?? Any suggestions/comments/feedback would be greatly appreciated. Have a great one all!
