Hello everyone!
I received a samsung sh-s182m as a present from a family member to replace an I/O Magic drive that was pretty subpar. At any rate, this drive doesn't really seem to work correctly. Sometimes it will reinstall itsself with the wrong driver, or not even show up on my computer, and when I do get it to install then it will not burn DVDs correctly. I use Nero to burn my DVDs and I usually get a DMA-driver error/CRC error. I have no idea what's going on. My DMA is on, I've tried both my motherboard and Microsoft IDE drivers, I've tried several brands of discs, I have no idea what to do. Is my drive broken?

Hi and Welcome!

please try a new IDE cable (favourably a 45 cm/18" 80 wired flat ribbon cable). Or at least check if all cables are properly installed and if the jumpers are set correctly.

Hey Mike,
I believe I have a new IDE cable in there but I'm not sure its 80 pin. I will check when I get a minute. Otherwise the jumpers are set so that both drivers are cable select or that my DVD burner is the master, and my Lite-On Combo SOHC-5236K (CDRW/DVD Reader) is slave. Any other suggestions?

Hi,

an 80 wired cable is not mandatory with your drives, a good 40 wired one should work fine either. To make sure, the cables are properly connected, just dis- and reconnect them and check if the connector pins are in perfect order.

Jumpers should be Master/Slave with the master at the end connector of the cable.

Never experienced any issues with cable select myself as I find it more convenient than Master/Slave.
My 182M is connected that way & performs very well.

I only use cable select with 80 pin cable as they are spec'd to support it (pin 28). Not all 40 pin cable have pin 28 open on the middle connector. If you use an 80 pin cable, cable select should work just as reliably as manual master/slave jumpers. The drive on the end connector, farthest away form the motherboard connector, will be master and the one in the middle will be the slave. I recommend them over manual jumpers for sure.

While this is okay, you seem to have a lot going on, you might want to look at freeing up some system resources.

Take a look at either Taiyo Yuden (TY), or Verbatim.

General rule of thumb is half the maximum rated speed of the blank, for example, 16X burn @8X.

This is Roxio, well known to conflict with Nero. (RoxioZap) it.

Also, this driver is installed by Windows Media Player itself. No need to remove.

Here's a few other things you can check:
-In your BIOS setup, make sure "IDE DMA Transfer Access" is "Enabled".
-Get rid of the XP DMA/PIO bug by following the instructions on this page: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817472/
(Follow the instructions near the bottom of the page regarding how to add the "ResetErrorCountersOnSuccess" keys to your registry.)
-Check in Device Manager to see that the IDE channel your Samsung is on is set at "Ultra DMA Mode 2".
-Uninstall the drive in Device Manager, then let XP re-discover it and reload its drivers on your next bootup.
-I agree with the above comment: Only use Verbatum or TY disks--use only Verbatum if you plan on using your LightScribe feature, not Memorex.

I appreciate everyone's input. After trying everything everyone has said though I do not have Roxio and do not use the LightScribe feature, I went and purchased a LiteOn DVD drive and everything is good to go again. I guess I just got a bad drive, although I am planning on building a new system as this one is getting pretty old and the system doesnt seem to like to keep up with all the nonsense going on with program updates these days. Anyways I appreciate everyones help.
