i am thinking of buying this external drive because the one that came with my sony laptop sucks this is the set up on laptop:

1.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7100 processor, 160 GB Serial ATA hard drive, 2 GB RAM (4 GB max), 8x LightScribe DVD-/+RW drive
Connectivity: 3 USB, 1 FireWire, 1 VGA, 1 S-Video, ExpressCard 34, Memory Stick/SD card slots
Intel 4965 AGN wireless LAN connects to draft 802.11n routers (as well as 802.11a/b/g)
Pre-installed with Windows Vista Home Premium (with Media Center capabilities); integrated WebCam

is this a good external that would work or is there another i should look at need to buy at BB right now it is on sale for 79.99

this drive says its EIDE (ATAPI) interface what does that exactly mean can i plug into usb 2.0

This is a very goob external USB2 burner. I've had mine for a while and this drive burns magic. no problem to get decent 18x burns sub 5:30 minutes.

Yes, connection is USB but the drive inside is a common IDE drive. A small motherboad inside enclosure is used to to "convert" USB stream to IDE (sorry for this non technical explanation).

so will it work okay with my laptop or should i just buy another one and replace the one in the laptop i just need it to burn with the one in the laptop plays movies fine thanks in advance for the help again

Laptop drives are limited at 8x speed for burning/reading DVD's.
With decent USB2 controller in your laptop a external burner should be able to reach double speed.
The burn quality on "half high" (nomal size) burners is also much better then on laptop drives.

As long as your lappy holds a $ntel mobo there shouldn't be any problems.
(But depending on other equipment connected to USB ports your milage may vary.)

Tools like CPU-Z will tell you everthing worth to know about your lappy.
