Samsung drives don't report back the actual booktype setting. That's why there is this message from ImgBurn.

Michael
I think that a Benq-like auto-bitsetting firmware would be very appreciated anyway....

I love my Benq 1620!!

Read the last couple of pages of the DRU-840A thread. Someone reported on which drive FW they could crossflash to.

Does the firmware work with the SH-S203P too?
I wanna buy a new burner and i dont know wether it is interesting to buy a P version.

Btw. Is the Lightscribe capability still given after flashing to rpc1 firmware? And if there is one firmware for all burner versions does it really matter which one i choose or are there still differences after flashing to rpc1+fr+fb?

You have to use a SH-S203P firmware. You can apply the RPC1 patch with my MCSE tool. The Lightscribe capability is not touched by the patch. Currently there are no FR/FB patched SH-S203P firmwares.

I'm sorry to go all n00b on you guys... but I'm really interested in the modified firmwares for my sh-s203B, but I can't find any information on what exactly I can gain from it... All I can find are props to codeking for the firmwares, and mentions of a modified firmware in people's signatures.

I have downloaded a pack of FB-FR & FR (only) firmwares, but I don't have any clue which one is right for me. I have installed modded firmwares on other devices, such as my router and my cel phone, but ODD firmware mods are relatively new to me.

To let you all know how new I really am to this, I'm even using a login that I got from bugmenot.com... so this is my first experience with CDFreaks. As a result, if someone could email me a link or a quick tutorial of what it is I'm looking at, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

So, if you ever flashed your router/cell phone, you know that you need firmware and flasher right? You've already got the firmware, now get the flasher. You can use the 3.27 version.

Read this thread if you don't know what FB and FR means.

Then flash the firmware with the feature you want, I think most ppl will just settle for FB-FR together.

If you want some more, let's say region-free (RPC1), get MediaCodeSpeedEdit

It's easy to use with the friendly GUI, try figure it out by yourself

I agree with david.w that the firmwares for the samsung drives do seem more confusing. I remember the Nec, Pioneer, and benq drives were just a firmware and thats it. These samsung drives seem like there are multiple flashes and edits to do.

what is confusing there? There is a firmware binary and a flash tool. Easy to get and easy to modify with MCSE.[quote]

Just like Samsung, Pioneer firmwares also consist of a flash tool and a firmware file. But for some purpose, you have to patch both. The official Pioneer flasher does not allow to revert to an older firmware. It also refuses to work with some modified firmwares. Samsung's flasher is more tolerant here (provided, the checksum is okay)
Benq was quite straight forward, but some people really missed the official availability of binary firmware. Same applies for Liteon.

SH-S202N RPC1 version SB01 rpc1 fw sets my drive in an unusable condition. The light is brighting continously and it isn't even possible to open the drive. Within linux all drives on this IDE bus disappear.

These firmwares were tested and should work.

What drive do you have, how is it connected and exactly what have you done?

My drive is a Samsung SH-202N. It is connected as a Slave on a the Secondary IDE port. I have used the standard fw update application (sfdnwin.exe, 3.25.6). Updating from official SB00 to SB01 was working fine. Flashing from official SB01 to SB01rpc1 results in an unusable drive (tested two times).

Hello everybody,

I've exactly the same issue here : my SH-202N is connected as a Master on the Primary IDE port. Flashing from SB01 to SB01rpc1 leaves the drive in 'BOOT' state, even after a computer reboot.

Flashing back to official SB01 solves the 'BOOT' problem... but doesn't solve the region one

The SH-202N SB01 firmware listed in the first post has a bad checksum. Apply the RPC1 patch with MCSE to the original firmware instead.
Do NOT use the bad RPC1 firmware with MCSE, as the file type is not detected because of the bad checksum.

Hello, I have a little problem with flashing my TSSTcorp SH-S203B/BEBN drive, when I'm trying to flash your modified firmware or the original SB03 firmware, the flasher says my drive is incompatible with the firmware. Win inquiri says the OEM code is 0 and the version is SB00

Re-read the first post. You need to use MCSE with the correct FW for your drive, ie. G/H/J/N/B/D.

Looks as if the SATA chipset (or its configuration) isn't very compatible with optical drives. You might have a look into the FAQ please.

Then this is incompatible also.

I expected this. Be happy, so you didn't kill your drive.

My system has no native SATA support, so this might be the problem.

Guess I have to buy another Mainboard first.

A SATA controller card with Silicon Image 3112, 3512 or 3114 chipset should be cheaper.

Read just about all I could today concerning firmware upgrades for the sammys listed here. I have both. The sh-s203b and the sh-s202j. Both show firmware updates at the firmware page. only sb02 for the sata when there's sb03 at the samsung site. Have sb00 on my sh-s202j but there's an upgrade to sb01. now is it recommended to upgrade to the latest firmware irregardless of whether or not you have issues? there seems an ambivalence towards this. I'm not worrying about the region free thing because dvdfab takes care of all that. I somehow got lost on how to update the damn firmware and windows doesn't want to open up the file either, whether it's w/the utility flash tool or not. Just a simple push in the right direction would be greatly appreciated as always.

Also I'm completely lost on that winrar app. . Believe me I do my research but this time I'm completely out of it. Thnx.

P.S. I updated my Pioneer 112d to 1.24 a while back w/some post from one of you guys that showed how to do it. Think Alan had the post. Not sure. Now these sammys got me nuts.

If you don't have issues, then there is no need for installing newer firmware.

Have you already seen the Read First HOWTO Flash Firmware for a Samsung DVD writer?

No need for Winrar. Get the free 7zip, install it and then just right-click the file to extract the files to a folder you like.
