I've recently built a new PC with Vista Home Premium and the Samsung SH-S203. I used Nero V7.9.6.0 to burn a few data old DVD-R disks that I had with no problems. However I have just bought some new Taiyo Yuden unbranded disks and have had my first three burns all come out as coasters. Nero just reports a write failure and when I tried to save a copy of the log my PC virtually locked up.

Before I start stabbing around in the dark to get these disks to work and creating loads more coasters, is there a way that I can find out whether these disks are supported by the Samsung drive firmware and by Nero? I can't seem to find detailed information on either Samsung's or Nero's web sites.

DVDInfoPro reports one of my failed disks as:

I marked the possible problem in bold letters.
Seems you are running an Intel based system with SATA controllers set to AHCI or even RAID. Both operating modes are not compatible with ODD operation.
As first step please try to change the driver for the controller your Samsung is attached to to MS default drivers (if possible).
Or change the operating mode of your SATA controller in BIOS setup to "IDE compatible" unless you are running a RAID.

Uninstalling the virtual CD drive software is also a good idea for troubleshooting.

Thank you for your reply, Michael. Unfortunately I am running two SATA hard drives in a RAID0 configuration. I don't really want to remove RAID, especially as I would have to rebuild my system.

I have had about half a dozen successful burns on other media but it does seem that this could be a SATA set up problem.

I'll try uninstalling the virtual drive and see if that makes any difference.

My motherboard is an MSI P965 Platinum and supports SATA RAID on an Intel ICH8R chipset. It does have a separate JMicron controller, JMB361, which supports a SATA port and an IDE port but I've read about problems with this controller.

I'm a bit out of my depth here but I need my DVD writer working.

Just did another burn without any virtual drives and it failed again. The log file shows DMA is off for the drive.

What do I do now?

Hi,

so the drive is fine with other media? Hmm. Are these DVD-R also or are they DVD+R?

Since your HDDs are running in a RAID, then indeed switching the operating mode is no option. As I am not familiar with Intel RAID, I can't help further. Maybe there is some config tool that help, but I don't know. You might check Intel website in order to get further information.

Also, you should still try the Jmicron: set it to IDE (non RAID) and let Windows install its default drivers. Maybe that works.

About DMA=Off in the Nero log: Nero reports all drives as DMA=Off if they are run by manufacturer's drivers.

I may have burnt the other media at 8x. I wonder if that would make a difference?

With DMA off the burn will suffer from continuous buffer underruns and the time needed to a full burn will increase too much.

Excessive buffer underruns makes the drives to fallback the speed ( slower )and may degrade the quality of the burn.

A possible solution is to acquire a SATA PCI or SATA PCI-E card. ( with Vista support )

I agree with mciahel. Just give the Jmicron a try.
Install the IDE driver -not raid- for the Jmicron and see what happens.
MSI is offering the driver on their gobal website. There´s also a cd-rom DOS driver for
the Jmicron, so I thing the controller is able to handle ODDs.

I'm going to try the JMicron today and if that doesn't work, I'll get a SATA PCI card.

Thanks for the help.

I'd try MS default drivers before going the way with Jmicron drivers.

I've enabled the JMicron controller, connected up my Samsung DVD, booted up Vista which loaded it's own drivers and Sandra Lite shows DMA enabled. I did a 16X burn which completed successfully and Nero CD-DVD Speed gave the following scan results:

General Information
Drive: TSSTcorpCDDVDW SH-S203B
Firmware: SB00
Disc: DVD-R (TYG03)
Selected speed: 8 X
PI errors
Maximum: 15
Average: 1.11
Total: 18305
PI failures
Maximum: 2
Average: 0.00
Total: 479
PO failures: n/a
Jitter: n/a
Scanning Statistics
Elapsed time: 9:21
Number of samples: 123200
Average scanning interval: 1.07 ECC
Glitches removed: 0

I'm not very knowledgeable on scan results but I think this is a respectable result.

I'm so relieved that this has worked.

Thanks for all the help,

Other media only burnt at 8X and thus does not require much bandwidth. Your TYG03 is best burnt at 20X under that drive and your controller has the DMA turned off and thus it is the bottle neck. This is the reason why I am so affraid to get an SATA burner since most burners, even using SATA interface, but technologically acts like an IDE and thus not complete compatable with SATA controllers because SATA controller makers dont want to address this issue, it can be fix with the driver that address this issue but they ignore it and thus the optical drive companies suffer for making SATA drives

Glad that your problem is solved. I have Asus P5B Deluxe, it is using P965 as well and I am running raid as well, it also has the JMICRON controllers but I disable it. Too reluctant to try SATA drives
