I wasnt sure where to post this but as i'm not sure if my problem is related to the drive or Nero i chose to post it here.

Picked up a SH-S183A the other day. Back home i was gutted to learn that the drive couldnt be flashed to burn +media as dvd-rom. After reading a bit here on the forum i thought fine, ill just have to burn my dvd-backups using Nero.

I'm using Nero 7.5.0.2 and when trying to follow http://club.cdfreaks.com/showpost.ph...&postcount=159 i cant get it to work. Basically i dont have the booktype option in the "choose recorder" dialog window

I thought that maybe a firmware upgrade would solve it but that didnt work either. I tried to use the sfdnwin.exe 3.25.6.0 but when trying to load the S183A.SB02.patched-rpc1.bin i got the message that the firmware is incompatible with my drive. Same thing with the official SH-S183A_SB03.bin

Am i'm doing something seriously wrong or am i right in thinking i shouldnt have bought this drive ?

I'm a big time newbie (and generally a bit dense anyway) so please explain what i should do. I'm going crazy, i use my burner mainly backup movies and coz of that i really ned to be able to burn as dvd-rom.

You cannot, no one can.
Only booktyping is possible.

The drive should do bitsetting fine.

This does not look nice. Did you buy an OEM drive perhaps?

Please report back the OEM code shown by sfdnwin. Also tell us, what controller (especially its chipset) you have connected your drive to.

Yeah, but not permanent and only with Nero right ?

Nah, dont think so anyway. Bulk version with a Samsung cd with users manual and some software ( Nero Express & InCD) on it. And everything is labeled Samsung. This is what it looks like in Nero 7.5.0.2:

OEM code? This is what happens and what it looks like:

Not quite sure about that but i use the controller on my old Asrock K7Upgrade-880.

Thanks for the help!

Okay then. Get the identification tool from here: http://www.samsungodd.com/eng/LiveUp...FWvercheck.asp and check OEM code again.

Seems, there is a VIA SATA controller involved. See also this thread: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=222460
There are problems with this controller and at least Samsung SATA drives preventing installing newer firmwares.

About your bitsetting issue (this should look like this: http://club.cdfreaks.com/showpost.ph...89&postcount=2 in Nero Express 6.6), maybe the latest Hyperion Pro drivers from viaarena.com could improve things.

You might also try ImgBurn, if there are similar problems with bitsetting (perhaps there is something wrong with your Nero installation).

OEM code 1

Seems just like in the other thread you linked to.

I'm not sure there is any newer sata drivers. I reinstaled my system a couple of weeks ago and i'm pretty sure i used the latest drivers. But i'll look in to that.

Sorry for the bad news.

Hyperion Pro 5.13A was published recently. But I suspect, you won't still be able to update your firmware.
Is there any possibility to return the drive and get the IDE version (182D/182M) instead? Provided, there are unused PATA connectors on your system.

I would be very careful with any via drivers, the default xp sp2 ones for pata are the only ones I trust, however sata is a different story

Unlike Nvidia or Intel, VIA SATA does not run in IDE compatible mode, so you need their drivers. I experienced, that Windows (2000) used its internal drivers for PATA after having enabled the VIA SATA controller in BIOS If not, then this can easlily be changed.

Me Too But stay clear from adding any SATA ODD there

That's bad. And I suspect, there will be problems with other optical drives too.

Just get the Hyperion Pro package: http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx...D=1&CatID=1070 It contains all needed drivers.

Thanks but i dont like driver "packages". I prefer to do it manually via the device manager. The risk of fucking up somthing else is a lot smaller doing it manually. I only need the SATA driver.

B.t.w. would flashing the drive in a system with a different sata controller work or maybe buying a cheap pci controller card (with anything but VIA controller)?

Well, i just tried both the Falcon & V-raid and managed to update the driver. Now it says VIA Raid Controller - 3149.

But still no difference offcourse.

Think i'm gonna try to flash the drive in my brothers computer.

Well, reading about the issues with that chipset and ODD is warning enough not to try a SATA drive any more. I had a SH-W163A, that did fine on my onboard Promise SATA/IDE controller, but my new SH-S182D failed there.

That's why I moved my HDDs to the Promise and have all native IDE ports free for ODDs

No "lock" option in BIOS? Or does this affect only the PCI and AGP bus?

RAID operation might make things worse with your drive. You may try playing with the RAID configuration tool from VIA. This will of course not help getting your firmware flashed.

Make sure he is running Intel or Nvidia SATA controllers in IDE compatible mode.

Are Intel and Nvidia the only ones that can be run in IDE compatible mode. I found a cheap sata controller card with Silliimage (or something like that) chip. What i'm getting at is if its only VIA that sucks.

Hi,

Silicon Image cards should work also, but since most of them come with RAID BIOS, they have to be flashed to non-RAID BIOS before they can be used with optical drives.

Concerning the VIA chipset: At the moment I am not aware of similar issues with drives from other manufacturers. Maybe this is a Samsung-only problem, but I am cautious.
Note to myself: Seems, some search has to be done

the via southbridge raid lock is broken, flawed? Running stock that bus is faster than the promise's. Windows only lasted a couple of weeks on that chipset. Of course I was running HT at 1450 at one point with command rate 1T, seemed stable and fast as heck.

I have a SH-S203B installed in an onboard SATA2 ( VIA 8251 southbridge ) and it works perfectly. The SATA controller is configured as IDE in BIOS. I'm not have try AHCI and RAID modes yet.

The cheapest card i found was a Silicom Image 3512 and it works perfectly I got to choose raid or non-raid drivers when installing and choose non-raid.

It was a bit expensive though, about 34$. But the burner finally functions as it should so ........

Thanks for the help guys, u rock
