The drive needs certain hardware inside for LightScribe. If your drive isn't LightScribe-capable to start with, a firmware crossflash won't help.

There are drives that you can achieve this though I'm not sure about the 223F's yet.

If it was NEC...you sure it wasn't Labelflash? I know that has been possible by crossflashing.

Interesting that I make such a good thread so let's rephrase the question is the 223F capable then?

Open the drive tray, and look inside the drive for a red LED glowing. This will be the LightScribe indexer LED. If there's not one glowing, then it's not capable. You can also open up the drive manually and look for one, or just go ahead with the crossflash and see if LS will work.

The only drive I knew to be capable of upgrading to LightScribe was some drives from the LG GSA-4164B series, which were essentially firmware downgraded 4166B's. Later versions of the 4164B had the extra hardware removed.

LabelFlash, on the other hand, doesn't have any extra hardware required, so all that's required is a Labelflash-capable drive with the same hardware as a non-capable drive [see Pioneer and NEC/Optiarc drives].

I doubt that you'll have much luck with it, though.

No it is not possible, it does not have the Lightscribe hardware necessary. It was back in 2006 and it was Labelflash as Arachne has said, my mistake, if you do a search you can read all about it.
