Either way, 7-Zip should be able to deal with that.

But, I'm not having any luck in getting at the .bin file (either). Right-clicking it to 7-Zip gives no result, and to double-check, the 7-Zip test function gives the diagnostic message, "SH-S182M_SB06.exe is not supported archive."

I've also tried this utility after changing the file extension to .zip. then to .rar. I know this shouldn't be necessary, but still, no joy.

Obviously, someone has gotten this file to open. More details, please.

    Try Universal Extractor.

Also, I'm pretty sure that the file has to extract itself to a temporary folder first, in case Universal Extractor doesn't work.

rpc1's new server and service provider was supposed to stop this from happening again.

    It's a ZIP archive.

Make sure, you use the latest version of 7-zip. If that fails also, then the firmware file is corrupt.

Thanks to both, but the comment in red "did it." And, I downloaded a second time, to make sure nothing was corrupt.

To avoid getting a lot of "trash" on the Desktop and elsewhere in "permanent" storage, I like to do first downloads of new software to the Mount Rainier drive, run 7-Zip on the optical disc, and then drag out what I want to keep, for later transfer to magnetic storage.

This has been working quite well for almost everything, but the bit about having to set-up a temporary folder "rang a bell" with a past problem likely involving software that was (also?) ill-behaved in setting up a temporary folder on a -MRW disc.

So, I did it the old-fashioned, reliable way, with a Folder on the Desktop, and it began to work ...

doubled1979, all of the tests I can do, without having the drive, show that this firmware should work as well as the S223F, when patched.

Released Patch Utility for Samsung v3.4.0

    Version: v3.4.0 (4 August 2008)
    * Fixed a problem with 20x and 22x EOPC, that caused DVD-R detection issues in other drives.
    * Removed the 20x drives "Increase DL read speed" patch.

    Note:
    * If you are using a 20x or 22x drive and the EOPC patch, please repatch and flash your drive, using this version.
    * The change to correct the DVD-R issue will not change the burn quality from the previous version.

Thanks again C0deKing for the excellent work. Out of curiosity where is everyone getting the their samsung firmwares from?

    Is it from http://samsungodd.com/ ?

    I currently have an SH-203B.

    Hi Everybody,

Thanks C0deKing for the great work you are doing.

Is it possible to put a burn speed limiter in the patch utility.

I find that most media burns fine at around 8x and I am not particularly interested in superfast burn speeds, more reliable burn speeds.

I am sure Nero used to have an option to limit burn speed on a global basis but can't find that any more and remembering to set each time doing a burn is a bit hit and miss.

I have found with the Samsung 203 and 223 that they read quite well (dvd great after riplock patch applied) but burns are quite variable at high speeds.

So if an option to limit burn speed to say 8x dvd and 24x cd was available it would simplify things for me, and I suspect others.

    Keep up the great work.

    Kind regards,

    Harry230

    Hi,

Introducing the option of a burn speed limit in the Patch Utility gives no sense, since burn speeds are up to the user's personal preference. So, the user should use the options and settings he is offered in the burning application he is using.

With ImgBurn, you can set speed limits for each media/burner combination you're using.

You might also try to change the possible burn speeds for certain MIDs with MCSE (haven't tried myself).

Thanks for that, but if you read my posting I did say an "option" to limit speed.

A check box in the patcher would be great, and ,yes you are right, users could choose what max write speed they want when they load patched firmware.

Having this in the patcher would be great, as for me (and I would guess some others) it is not all about speed but consistent reliable burns.

While it is great having burners now in the 22x range, they don't always work well.

The great thing about omnipatcher for Liteon drives was the ability to change write strategies and speeds that media would work well with. As we don't have this with Samsung a couple of standard slower "check boxes" would be useful to prevent excess coaster production.

The problem I have is every time I use burning software I have to reset the speed my media best burns with, sometimes I miss it and it burns at the nominal max speed, this can produce quite a few errors. Hope this makes more sense.

22x is just plain overspeeding for a few selected MIDs. Great for marketing, not really of importance in real world.

You should really have a look at MCSE.

Why was the DL read speed increase removed for 20x drives? Was there a problem with it?

The increased speed to 16x wasn't so stable. [Browse a few pages and you should find a few TRTs of DL discs between the 20x and 22x drives].
