Hope someone can change the name of this thread because the "202 SATA" drive OT linked to at newegg indeed is a SH-S203 according to fairplay.

The SATA drive listed at Newegg only does 12X Dual Layer....the 203B does 16X...are you sure about that?

When alan1476 and I (among others) get ours on Friday we can help confirm one way or another if they are shipping the 203B like fairplay got.

Think you got it wrong.
DoubleLayer is 12x* max. (Figure 16.2MB/s might been confusing some though.)

The SH-S203B writes DVD+R DL @16x and DVD-R DL @12x
According to the box.
It does indeed read both formats at 12x

Thanks Dee, I have quite a few 16x -R mids that I think can write acceptably at 12x so that is good, it's still faster than 8x.

I hope I get my drive in the morning Friday then I will have a few hours to make some scans.

Hi,

I am planning to purchase this Samsung SH-202g drive at newegg, but I'm afraid it has riplock which would limit DVD movie ripping.
Can anyone who purchased it let me know if it has riplock? Also, about what speed do you get usually get when ripping DVD movies??

Hi kagato

From what all I've read, no Samsung drives have riplock. You can see that from the many reviews (18x drives) in the read performance section. I'm doubtful that Samsung will ever add that function (I am speculating on this). Just don't buy an LG if your worried about a riplock, all LGs seem to have it.

As far as actual ripping speed goes, it depends mostly on the media, whether or not it is dual layer. When ripping dual layer there is an inherent slow down when it gets to the second layer (with any drive).

I hope this helps.

The 18x drives have slower readback speeds for at the least single layer DVD +-R media. The 20x drives don't seem to "suffer" from this, though, and other members report no riplock on their drives. But for pressed SL and DL media, the speeds were already 16x and 8x in the 18x drives, respectively. Maybe other members can tell you if pressed DL media is read at 12x in the new drives as it is in the Lite-On drives.

Awesome!
I just went ahead and bought the SATA 203g. I didn't want to waste money on something that might've had riplock. Thanks for the info guys!

Note, they can even be more once we learn to know what "fast speed" function really means.
