The 20x is the newer and better generation drives.

Since some 18x series drives suffer from a DVD-R compatibility problem, the 204 is the better option for you.

That's not easy done on Samsung externals.
I tried (SE-S184M), but had to give up not damaging the drive itself.

Maybe our senior members can have a "look", (and from what I've heard it is the same as in my S203N).

Microsoft's UVCView helps retrieving Vendor and Product ID (also manufacturer) of the USB controller chipset

And the next difference compared to SE-S184M is, that the firmware of 204N is not identical to an internal version (184M is exactly the same as 182M).

Morgan, would you be good enough to run a Nero InfoTool report for us, and post the result?

My special interest is in seeing if the "Mount Rainier" box is (or is not) checked, but if it's not too much trouble to attach the entire report, others may appreciate that.

Or, if anyone reading this post knows if an InfoTool report for this drive is already posted somewhere, that would be great.

Thanks!

Thanks very much.

I see they dropped Mount Rainier support.

I'll try to get the previous model, while I'm still able. Would have been impossible to get this kind of info, without your help.

Here (new, not refurbished) for $45 plus shipping. The equivalent SH-182M is in service for six months, mounted internally, and with Nero CD-DVD Speed gives relatively error-free reports on discs that show more errors when tested on the present, seven+ year old, iomega external drive (also MRW compatible, though). New Mount Rainier-capable drives are becoming difficult to get, at any price ...

To avoid posting misleading information, I cannot advise dealing with this company. The advertisement said "new," but the unit I was sent was obviously not.

There was extreme vibration as soon as a mounted disc began to spin, and damage to the drive's trim indicated someone had already attempted (unsuccessfully) to open the unit.

Only because I very much wanted a Mount Rainier burner, and a replacement was impossible, I took matters into my own hands and discovered the disc support-spindle on the upper inside of the case, that stabilizes the disc's center hole, was jammed into an eccentric position. In my opinion, an assembly defect, and this drive had never worked. Once this support was unjammed, discs began to mount, center and spin properly and drive is running quietly and reliably.

This drive shipped not directly from the company's main location, but from a California facility. Obviously, someone doesn't know what they are doing.
