Samsung Writer Discuss, 203N To Get or Not to Get at CD and DVD Writers forum; I read the review on the 203B. It mentioned that C1 and C2 errors are not fully reported on CDs. So, am I better off not using this drive for CDs? I just got the following as back-ups for when my hallowed BenQ turns toes up: Lite-On SHW-160P6S DVD+/- DL

So, am I better off not using this drive for CDs?

I just got the following as back-ups for when my hallowed BenQ turns toes up:

Lite-On SHW-160P6S DVD+/- DL Burner ($5)
LG GSA-H54L DVD+/- DL Burner ($20)
Samsung SH-S182M/BEBN DVD+/- DL Burner ($20)

I'm debating getting a 203N SATA.

Your input is greatly appreciated.

I decided to get a 203N (SB01) based on some other reports of the 203B supporting accurate stream, no caching, C2, leadin/leadout, and HTOA.
I have only tried one disc so far but based on my test I confirmed that this drive supports the features listed above. In my past experience using EAC if you select overrread into leadin/leadout and the drive does not support you will get error during reading process and I did not get any errors with the 203N. This drive may turn out to be the best drive I have ever used with EAC.

It doesn't have the overly large lead-in problem with DVD-R the 182 (I think) had?

Was I foolish to get the two LG GSA-H54L's and the Samsung SH-S182m/BEBN as back-up to my BenQ for $20 each packaged by I/O Magic?

I have SATA on my MOBO in use with HDs.
I just got a Rosewill PCI - SATA1 card from Newegg.
I don't recall the chipset.
I've read that this Sammy doesn't like some chipset on expansion cards.

I think I'm getting this Sammy.
I just like to hear the "good move" comments.

Thanks

Now is as good a time as any to get the 203N (if you are in the US).
NewEgg has them $29.99 with free shipping as we speak.

That's where I'm looking to buy it.
I'm just wondering if there's any other deals too good to pass-up to add to my order.

The free shipping makes it a must do.

I've noticed Samsung, Lite-On, LightScribe/NON-LightScribe, IDE/SATA all within a few dollars of eachother between the two brands without taking shipping into account.
Shipping charges make a big difference.
I hope this Samsung is a much better choice than the Lite-On.

Thanks

this just means, you can't use this drive for CD scanning (like all other drives available at the moment).
On the other hand, it is one of the better CD writers

Also a very good CD writer

Correct. This issue is not present with the 20x series.

Avoid VIA, Promise might work (not always).
Best choice is a card with Silicon Image chipset. Cards that come as RAID have to be "crossflashed" to non-RAID BIOS.
