That's a unique approach and don't know if I'd think of doing it that way after succeeding in doing it as shown in first post at http://club.cdfreaks.com/f102/shw-16...uccess-165085/; however, your way seems it may be a sturdier install. BTW your Sony DRU-190A appears to be a rebadged LiteOn DH-20A3P according to http://club.cdfreaks.com/f44/sony-ne...u-190a-235352/, and it should work just as well as the DH-20A4P you recently installed. |
| Thanks to CrazyCanuck and bevills1 for the feedback I will post the result of trying the sony 190A in the 5006 and btw I noticed when I removed the old rw unit that the p.c.b. was stamped with a sony logo and that`s why I thought I would try it and perhaps it might be quieter too as we all know that the original could sound like a helo taking off as it spun up and down - will post again soon with results , thanks guys |
| Hi guys, was away for the weekend and when I came back - my daughter informed me she couldn`t play rented dvds in the 5006... so checked it out today and guess what forgot to set the region (2 ) in my case . So while I had the machine stripped down I tried the sony 190A and to my surprise (after setting region lol ) it plays records and most importantly it fast forwards 16 speed - so am replacing LITEON DH-20A4P in the 5006 and should have FULL FUNCTIONS once again. Funny how fate plays parts in your life in unexpected ways. Once again thanks to CrazyCanuck and bevills1 for all their help and ask that you excuse my laziness over this thread so to all u.k. members there is a reliable replacement - I bought from DABS.COM but it was £15 dearer than from my local supplier MPLEX who dont do the sony - so best of luck guys and hope I`ve helped in some way JOEDEE |

| Good to know the Sony DRU-190A fast forwards since it's a later model and probably easier to find than the Sony DRU-120A. I wonder if all Sony made by LiteOn drives retain fast forward when used as replacement drives. BTW you might check the LiteOn burner forum to see if the LiteOn DH-20A4P might be able to be cross flashed to to Sony to gain fast forward function similar to how I cross flashed my LiteOn SHM-165-P6S to Sony DRU-120C which would give you a backup drive that retains fast forward. |

| Note the Sony DRU-190A is fully functional regarding DVD, but it still probably lacks VCD record ability as do all post 1693 LiteOn models and rebadged LiteOn models. However, VCD recording is unimportant to many including myself. Also note that I saw in another thread that the NEC 3520A works as burner replacement and retains fast forward for LiteOn recorders, and the Benq DW-1620 is a fully functional replacement including VCD record ability according to a post in another forum. |
| I have fitted a Sony DRU 820A to my Liteon LVW5006 it works OK but the drive constantly clicks and the small indicator light on the front of the drive flickers when the unit is turned off. Can anyone advise please Dick |
| Add to the compatibility list an NEC ND-3520A & ND-3540A as fully working replacements. Stock NEC firmware & Liggy's modified Bitsetting, Riplock & RPC 1 firmware on both drives work perfectly. FF works on pressed & recorded DVDs, along with all other features on both drive models. Now actually getting them to fit into LVW-5007 is another story. |
| This has been good information, but still struggling to find a dive I can purchase(today). I had the LVW-5005 drive die this week. I use it as a main DVD also so need the FF feature and would like to get the macorvision and copy protection hack with region free. is there any drive out that that could do this? Is the MRX-530L suitable replacement? Also where would be the hacked firmware? Thanks.... |
| Go to http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...WiWTvz7oiKG.NQ to find Sony DRU-190A which retains FF function for $30. The MRX-530L is a rebadged LiteOn LH-20A1H which should work but will likely lack FF function. See http://www.ss3f.com/ilo/ for the hack program as well as an archive of LiteOn firmwares where you might find 098 firmware needed for your unit, but note the hack won't work on firmware past 098. |
| The MRX-530L does work including FF on my 5005X. The MRX-530L (frys 5282927) was $40 after rebate but it’s now $50. (a little over-kill but it’s new and works great) I had some longer cables so I just ran the cables out the back and put the drive on top. |
| I've only seen 2 later model Sonys that retain FF which are DRU-120C and DRU-190A, but I've yet to see a later rebadged LiteOn Sony model that doesn't retain FF. My suspicion is all rebadged LiteOn Sony models may retain FF, but only actual tests might confirm that. It's good to see the Memorex MRX-530L is another drive that retains FF. BTW you could set book type to DVD-ROM for +R media to increase playback compatibility by connecting to PC and using the Book Type Utility which another MRX-530L did in another forum. |

| I have just 'installed' a Sony AW G107A to my 5045. This has lived in a computer for the last few months as a 'burner' to a lite-On DVD ROM. So far it plays FF/FR ok, no idea if it burns yet, thats for 'RON'.(when I get "RON'd toit". As its legal here to have 'Region Free' I have numerous disc's bought form other zones but from what I have read and found after I installed the Sony, that may not now be an option unless someone knows a way to restore its Region Free ability. Lite-On isnt well represented here so I dont know if the series 5005/6/7 were ever sold here unlike in the UK & US. For that reason I am reading the postings carefully as I dont know what may or may not work on models sold here. Because of the '5 change lock' I am not too keen to go too far with the settings. Surfice to say on 'Region Free', a region 4 disc pixeled and froze. Region Free DVD players sell here from $40 depending on which Chinese brand you buy. One thing I havent seen mentioned in any posting is the connection of an 'Earth' strap/wire between the case of the replacement and he case of the Lite-On. I ran one, I dont know if it is needed but thought I'd do it anyway. I had the rather wild idea that if it is the Laser at fault in the original equipment, could it be replaced by one from another and leave the circuit board in place which would retain all the software. Anyone fancy a challenge???? |
| Hi gordon s1942, not sure about this but you may want to try the remote control hack, press setup, cursor and sit on exit, while sitting on exit press 2960 on the remote and this will open the hidden region setting menu, I personally do not own dvds from other regions but hey, never know, might work. |
| You should be able to connect the burner to PC and use the region free link from the last "Read first" sticky in the LiteOn Burner forum. You could also use the Book Type Utility from same sticky to bitset DVD+R to DVD-ROM for +R media to increase playback compatibility. |
| Hi, Just had the burner on my Liteon Fail me 'for the 2nd' time this time out of warranty... I see that this is a good general thread, the manual says that my liteon is a LVW 5025/5045/5025... So it covers 3 models. My question is as this seems to cover the 5xxx models how do I find out which model I really have? And do I have to worry or will any of the Burners mentioned earlier (and if I can get them) work in this model of liteon's anyway...? |

| Hi, Thanks for that, had thought I might had to go undoing all the scarts  But assuming that it is a LVW 5025/5045/5055 can you confirm that the Sony DRU-190A will work, as I see that Novatech.co.uk not far from me have 10 in today... I'd just like to order 2 and so have a spare, for if it happens again. Also any advice on the installation? As would be thinking of trying it over the weekend... All that I want the drive to do is simply burn DVD-r's not interested in playing them on this machine, if it does then thats a bonus  |
| The Sony DRU-190A should work just fine for burner replacement. See first link post #127 in this thread for 1 way to do replacement and post #125 for another way to do it. Remember to connect to PC to set region and to do any firmware updates before installing in the recorder. |

| I don't see where it mentions flashing the Sony, and it's not necessary. Now the LiteOn LH-20A3P can be cross flashed to Sony DRU-190A to eliminate the freeze on fas forward problem. I have a LiteOn SHM-165P6S that I cross flashed to Sony DRU-120C for the same reason, i.e. eliminate freeze on fast forward. BTW you can use the Book Type Utility from the LiteOn Burner forum while connected to PC to bitset DVD+R to DVD-ROM book type to increase playback compatibility. |
