Hi

After being told by Litron Uk that they could not repair my HD-A970GX as it was bought from ebay Switzerland I on Friday decided to repair it myself.

I had a SOHW-832S DVD burner (Sep 2004) and from the list of burners that worked for others here, I new it should work.

So I took the old burner LMU-713H out of the HD-A970GX and following the instructions given on these boards adapted the HD-A970GX's case and SOHW-832S DVD burner and fitted it into place( I had already connected it earlier to see if it worked, and it did) and fitted the cover back on the recorder.

So far everything is working as if its a new recorder. I did take some photos , but they are a bit dark but will if I get time post them with details.

I would just like to thank all previous members who have taken the time to explain how the drive replacements were carried out by them, it helped loads in being able to repair my recorder.

I don't have a HD TV so cannot check to see if the recorder will still upscale dvds to 1080i and 1080p as the HD-A970GX does this. Does anyone know if this feature should still work in theory as I am not sure if it was the dvd burner or the pcb electronics or a combination of both that did the upscaling.

Can someone please let me know where I can get the latest firmware for the SOHW-832S drive. I already did set the region by inserting a commercial disk when connected to a pc, but did not upgrade the firmware.

If anyone is thinking about replacing the dvd burner in their recorder outside of warranty I would say have a go as it is not difficult.

My next step will be upgrading the HDD to a 500Gb at some point

I have 3 x NEC ND-3500AG working perfectly in 3 x 5005s
In 2004, that NEC was the best burner you could get.

The lastest firmware for it is 2.1A and it's rock solid

Hi there - I have just purchased a LH-20A1P to replace the crappy dying drive in my 5005. Any tips on replacing the drive - I noticed that the pics of replacing drives on another thread have gone away - so anything you learnt that might catch people out ? Other than setting the region to 0 in my PC ?

cheers

I used some of this info when replacing 3 drives. Photos in a ZIP file these are not my pictures to post but I'm confident that the original author will not mind (I hope)
I read somewhere that cutting out the face plate so that the entire drive can be inserted through the front was an option. It's the method I've used. The first I used a jig saw and the job's a bit messy, the two replacements since however look pretty good.
Find the latest firmware for your new burner and flash it

Ok I replaced the drive - and I have one question. Is it important that I remove the bottom cover of the replacement drive ? I have the replacement drive sitting in place and everything is working just fine (no FF on this drive of course).

You can add the Sony DW-Q28 DVD drive to the list of compatible drives. (I believe it's a Sony OEM version of the LiteOn 1693.)
I used one in my LVW-5002 to replace the DDW-813S drive that it came with. Fast forward is jerky but works. It reads and writes DVD+RW perfectly, and is less picky about media than that 813S pile of junk was.

I just replaced the DDW-451S drive in my LVW-5007 with a LIte-On SOHW-1693S. (I'll post details and photos when I have a chance.)

I was able to test with 2 other drives I had around, and they both worked ok (including fast forward, though that was jerkier than with the 1693S). The drives are:

- Benq DW1670 (I tested with firmware 1.30) (I think this drive was also mentioned before in this thread)
- LG GSA-H10N (I tested with firmware JL12)

As a bonus, you may be able to get either of these on clearance at Staples for $22.50 now - look for the I/O Magic internal DVD drive IDVDL168DL, Staples item 643060. The boxes with the "black faceplate" sticker will have either the LG or a Samsung drive (which I don't have to try out); the ones without will have either the Benq drive or a Lite-On (probably the 160P6S or 165P6S). You can tell the Lite-Ons by looking in the bottom of the box and seeing bubble-wrap around the drive, or maybe pink plastic (though that's hard to see); I don't know a way to distinguish the LG and Samsung without opening the box.

It looks like the Benq drive can be modified to fit the original drive bezel more easily than the LG, but the Benq drive's tray is slightly wider (I don't think that's a problem but I didn't try it inside the 5007). Also, the Benq drive must be cross-flashed to take original Benq firmware upgrades (I didn't try it with the original firmware); the LG already has standard LG firmware.

These may be hard to find but would be a good deal...

I think it's better to leave the bottom cover in place if you can. On my 5007 replacement I first did it without the bottom cover, but the drive unit seems a little more rigid with the cover in place.

P.S. I forgot to mention that both the Benq and LG drives use a belt in the tray-open mechanism. The newer Lite-On drives use only gears. The old DDW-451S also has a belt, and I presume that's one of the points of failure (drive does not open).

I just installed a SONY DRU-830A in my ailing 5005. It plays commercial DVDs and can at least record R+. FF works and that is as far as I have gotten so far.
It was a bit of a pain getting it to fit the case properly. I needed to trim the new drive case a bit to allow the drawer to close completely.

Thanks for the info and help everyone!

Greetz to all. On behalf of ME & my mine LVW5005 I wanted to express my thanks for saving me from ditching my DVD rec & spending funds on new one as well as my LVW is happy to be still in service.
As I followed this forum for long time, but had no probs with my recorder, the moment came that my DVD burner died on me. So, following all YOUR advice I have replaced the original piece with:
LH-20A1P487C with firmware KL0N
Everything works fine now, FF works on everything except original DVD's were causes the system to hang. Tested already wide range of DVD media's & very satisfied, from Verbatim DVD+RW to crappy no-names. Simply NO PROBS. Hardware fits well in the casing, still need to figure out better way to immobilize it as the tray gets stuck from time to time & does not come out.
So now my S/N is: 0102-0243-0080-KL0N(011-010A).
And this is currently my focus of improvement.
So for those, I guess lucky ones who had LVW since 2004, and just faced the problem, the above model is a the right choice. Thx to RogerHunt for making me choose it as majority of the listed ones are notavailable or are shown in museums .

Once again, thx

And now the next immidiate Q, do you believe there is a need to improve DVD burners hardware to smthg resembling the original?

Has anyone used the Sony AWQ170A as a replacement for their Liteons.

Does the FF work? I want to use this drive for my Liteon 5115 GHC+.

According to http://club.cdfreaks.com/f102/help-h...-drive-236549/ burner replacement for 5115 model is not possible, and I suspect it's not possible on other models other than the 50xx LiteOns.

We have an LVW-5045 and had the drive in it die a little while ago. After reading through this thread (and a couple other threads/forums), I had a good idea of what models should work. However, before ordering one of those drives, I figured I'd try a drive I already had. That one didn't work so I had to go find one of the ones listed here. Eventually, I was able to find one and install it successfully. Here are my findings:

Pioneer DVR-111D / DVR-710 - This drive was in my PC so the DVD region was already set. I updated it to the latest official firmware from Pioneer and threw it in the LiteOn recorder. At first, everything seemed to work fine (even FF), but we found out the drive consistently fails during the final stages of recording to disc.

Sony DW-G120A - This was one of the few drives listed in this thread that I could actually find for sale in new condition. I got the drive, updated the firmware to the latest Sony version, and set the region. We popped it into the LVW and everything worked, including FF, recording, etc. The drive does seem to be a bit louder than the original and initially reading a disc when you put it in takes a while, but all-in-all we're pretty happy with it.

In another thread a user cross flashed LiteOn SHW-160P6S to LiteOn SHM-165P6S and then cross flashed LiteOn SHM-165P6S to Sony DW-G120A with its MYS6 firmware. This Sony has been reported to have normal FF function by several users of various LiteOn recorders. Obviously this requires connecting the drive to a PC and downloading appropriate files to flash.

Edit: BTW you can also set book type for +R media to DVD-ROM while connected to PC which increases play back compatibility. An old Toshiba player of mine would play no LiteOn LVW-5005 recordings regardless of media, but it plays all 5005 recordings with book type set to DVD-ROM for +R media since drive in the 5005 was replaced.

Thanks so much bevills1...can you tell me how I would upgrade the 165ps6 to the Sony DW-G120A? I don't see any reference to it in the eeprom instructions.

Instructions I got from other thread are copied and pasted below.
1. Go to http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_search.php and type "SHM-165P6S" in search box to find and download MSOP firmware.
2. Download Sony DW-G120A MYS6 firmware from http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2246.
3. Download the FlashFix utility from http://digi.rpc1.org/flashfix.htm.
4. With Upx.exe in same folder as FlashFix.exe run the FlashFix utility on the downloaded MSOP firmware first.
5. Flash the SHW-160P6S drive with the flash fixed MSOP firmware that cross flashes to SHM-165P6S.
6. Then with Upx.exe in same folder as FlashFix.exe run the FlashFix utility on the downloaded MYS6 firmware.
7. Flash the SHM-165P6S drive with the FlashFixed MYS6 firmware, and you're done.

I just wanted to post that my two year-old LVW-5045 optical drive died with the typical "won't burn or view in-process" DVDs symptom.

I bought a used SOHW-1633S on eBay, played a DVD to set the region in my Mac, and it appears to work great. I burned a bunch of new discs with no issue. FF seems to work. I don't use the music or VCD features so I didn't test them.

Any newer released drives that would work?
I Have a 5005X that stopped working.
Just tried a 840A with SS01 fw from one PC with no luck but the 800A from another PC works fine with KY06 fw.

Has anyone tried to crossflash a 840A with KY06 fw?
Will the 840A blow-up with KY06 fw?

i bought a new liteon DH-20A4p yesterday & did as was recomended..
hooked it to my pc & got the latest firmware then played a dvd to set the region..

after some adapting to make it fit ,it works very well...it takes all the newer
dvd rws i tried in it...these are tdk dvdrw 1-4x & maxell dvd rw 1-4x .
both erase just fine & so far i have recorded a 1 hr program then checked it played ok..it did...then it reads in my pc drive & is readable to dvd shrink...

then the two hour test works just as well.....so the new drive is working very well & is nice n quiet......
