| I own a 5005 and 5045 and have had to replace optical drives in both. I put the Liteon SHM-165H6S in both. The unit has recorded and played perfectly in the 5045. The unit in the 5005 however in about every 10th recording will stop after about 37 to 42 seconds. Half the time the disk can still be used, and the other half of the time the disk is made a coaster. The unit in the 5005 was moved to my computer where it has been recording flawlessly for two weeks now. So--"personally" I would not use the 165H6S in the 5005. Your mileage may differ.

Thanks to info from this thread, I got the Sony DRU-120C to replace the 813S in my 5005. As stated by others, it works like a charm -- fast forward, too. I'd just note two things: 1. Make sure you connect it to your PC first to set the region. Don't forget to do this like the schmuck I am personally acquainted with did. 2. To get the drive to fit in the 5005 you have to do two things: One, trim the openings for the faceplate as per instructions and pictures in the 5045 replacement thread. Two, trim the molded plastic braces in the inside front of the 5005 case so the drive fits closer to the inside of the case. If you don't do the latter, the drive will not open sometimes, and will not close properly either. (I've seen some suggestions for trimming the metal case of the drive, but it's sooooo much easier to take an exacto knife to the soft plastic of the case.) I didn't bother with brackets or screws, and instead made it snug in the 5005 with a length of gaffer's tape -- it ain't going anywhere. It will probably outlive the recorder.
| Good for you! You are now part of the growing list of people who replaced their drives.

I have been lurking on this forum for many years, getting info on firmware etc. I thought I would share my experiences replacing the drive in my LiteOn dvd recorder. I have a LiteOn LVW-5101 recorder which I bought in early 2005. The recorder stopped recognizing media, even burned CDs, though I barely used the recorder. The original drive was a 451s. I stuck a Pioneer DVR-112 in and it works, at least for playback. I have not tried recording as I have an LG dvd recorder now. Fast forward works perfectly up to 32x, and SVCD playback, even at non-standard bitrates, works as well. The front two screws of the DVD burner casing lineup with the holes in the recorder case so I used those two screws to secure it in place. As a consequence the drive sits about 1.5 inches farther back than normal. I can't use the original faceplate, and I have to angle DVDs when placing them in the tray but hey, at least I salvaged the unit so that it plays DVDs.
I'll make a long story short and say that I replaced my LVW5005xs with a Sony DRU120C and it works, recording, FF etc. I looked around at 6 PC stores and found nothing. Walking past Walmart I figured what the heck? They had a dozen drives @ $49. Who knew?

I notice the first page of compatible replacement drives hasn't been updated since April. I need to replace my drive, I will go to walmart to look for the Sony 120C, CC has an 840A (the list mentions an 830A). Any newer released drives that would work?
So far I haven't heard of any Lite-ON burners not working as a replacement. (as long as they are IDE and not SATA) I haven't heard about the SONY DRU-170 working or not.
This site is a great help-thanks to everyone involved! My 5045 has already had two replacement drives under warranty. Recently, out of warranty, it started showing the same tell tale signs of needing yet another replacement (poor show, Liteon!) I thought about updating firmware but my logic stopped me-if it had been working perfectly before, and with the same discs, it must be the drive. After reading everything here I purchased two second hand SHW-160P6S (61C) drives. They were only £10 ($20) each and the shipping costs were no different between one and two units. Therefore, I reckoned it was worth the small difference to buy two-firstly because of previous reliability (albeit with a different drive model) and secondly because they seem hard to come across now. The units arrived the next day and I was delighted to see that they were both only manufactured in late 2006! I am also delighted to report that the one I fitted worked beautifully straight out of the box (apart from the well documented lack of fast forward but, hey, who cares-I can fast forward by chapter and then rewind). Great result! As far as modification for fitting goes I admit to being lazy! Apart from bending two metal lugs on the front of the machine to allow the drive to sit closer to the front, I just used big lumps of blu-tac to sit it in place. The cover went on no problem. As far as the little rectangular slot cover goes, I just let the drive pop it out and then sit it back when the unit closes. It stays in place no problem. So I am just careful whilst loading discs. And to prevent damage in transit, I have a little label stuck on the top of the unit to remind me about the blu tac and to be careful whilst moving!! All lazy, I know, but it saved a lot of hassle and as long as care is taken whilst using or moving, everything will be just fine. Thought I would take the time to post this to continue the spirit of this helpful community-thanks again and good luck to those in need of it!
My LG-4040 drive works just fine in Liteon 5001 (and has for the past 2 years). Just tried FF and it works though it's choppy. Tried a newer GSA-H55L (LG) in a 5005 with the "stuck on Hello" syndrome and got nothing but that drive had not been put into a computer and had the region set. Will try that tomorrow and see what happens.
I have a LVW5005 I am having trouble finding 4x dvd's so wish to replace the drive . I have already flashed the unit with Mr Wizards #hr Region Free anti Macro. My question do I still need to put the unit in a PC to set it to a Region

If I update the firmware will that alter Mr wizard's Fixes. I thought that putting into the PC was to set the region ,Mine is region Free it plays PAL and NTSC no problem
The DVD burner is controled by the DVD recorders board. Updating the firmware and playing a commercial DVD with the burner hooked to your computer has no effect on Mr. Wizzard fixes. They are stored in the board not the burner. Some people have had just put the new burner in and it worked fine for them. Try it if you want to, the worst thing that will happen is you'll have to take it back out and hook it to your computer. If your new burner is retail try it. If its oem then I'd hook it to the computer first. Let us know how you make out.
I'm new to this. I have a lvw 5005 that i want to get a new drive for a spare. Could any one tell me if a lh 20a1p work as a replacement. If not could someone suggest a drive that is still easy to find. I'm sure this has already been posted but i have seen so many pros & cons to what drive to use. Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi I ordered an SHM165HS from Amazon, for my 5045 but they sent me a newer version of the allwrite DVD burner which burs at 20X rather than 16x and is vista compatible. Does anyone know if this will work, before I try to install it? cheers Fi
| Hello - is there anyone out there? or had I posted my question in the wrong place? The model I have is LH-20A1H487C (Aug 07). I have now installed it and it appears to be working fine with some discs. I'll post an update when I've had a bit more experience with its use, just in case anyone else out there is thinking of installing one of these. | The Pacific Digital $25 after instant savings from Staples is a Benq 1620 according to http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=228871. Note Benq 1620 is 1 of a few fully functional drive replacements according to posts I've read. Maybe it should be added to list at beginning of this thread even though it's rarely found. |
Hi all I have found that both the Lite-On LH-20A1P487C and the Sony DRU 710A work well in my 5045 Paul
I have replaced the defectiv drive DDW-813s with a LH18-A1P. Newest Firmware for the LH18-A1P, firmware 205 of the 5045. I have set the Regioncode with a pc. Now I can playing back and recording all DVD-Formats, but the fast forward and the fast review doesn't work if I play +R, -R or original-DVD!! +RW or -RW are OK. I have downgrade the Firmware of the 5045 to 204, because I heard the 205 is wrong, may be. The same problem. Then I rechanged the DDW-813s. The FF and Rew are OK, but no record. Is the SONY DRU-120C better?
Any Liteon drive higher than 1693s (x16) will not FF in Liteon-based recorders, the Sony DRU 120C does, or any other Sony 120s (OEM)also the DRU 820A which I have, if you got one try it. Some people were successful in crossflashing the Liteon 165 to a Sony 120. If you have access to the Sony 120, use it, it works,
Off subject a lil bit, The Liteon 5005 Recorders are still sold today brand new but they already have the macro/rf hack. Even though there like 3 yrs old there getting 399.99 for them. I got mine for 89.00 1 1/2 yrs ago and hex edited the data myself. Take a look see here!: http://www.barrel-of-monkeys.com/gra...iteon-SE.shtml
